A Grade Match Report: Round 13 v Glenunga
Pressure and Momentum come readily to mind when reviewing our game from Saturday. Pressure the contest, build scoreboard pressure, maintain these elements hold your own momentum and control that of your opponent’s puts you in a good position to control a game and outcome.
The aforementioned really typified our game Saturday. Up against a team full of their own momentum we went in full of confidence and keen to respond.
The opening half was full of pressure from both sides, Jack Hodges strong mark and goal his first for the club was a real highlight and team lifting moment early. Both side’s testing each other with transitional footy with team defence creating turnover and scoring outcomes.
What was glaringly obvious from the outset was their control at the source via their more experienced ruckman which our ruck combination in Brad Lymn and Dillon Huppatz worked hard to combat and our mids led by Xav Tranfa and Beau Baldwin did well to disrupt and create from. The work rate and pressure across the ground resulted in the scoreboard being all tied away at 45 points at the main break.
The message at the break continue to pressure and build the scoreboard. The third was and generally is defining in most games. The weight of work at the source placed enormous pressure on our defensive system and ultimately our back 6. Hugo Shute in only his second game at the level continued to impress and impact from D50 with his brother Josh, along with seasoned campaigner Tullio De Mattis together with ultimately best on Jack Michalanney we rebounded time and time again. Unfortunately we were unable to finish our work and hit the end of the quarter with just 5 points and a deficit of 11 points at the siren.
The game still with in grasp at the final break and a lot to play for we headed out to start the final quarter, with the aim to maintain the pressure , equalise the scoreboard and build our own momentum. Jett Boxer, Charlie Kemp lifted and we continued to hold them, Ben Spehr kicking his second for the day was our only push on the scoreboard button as our opponents built their own momentum kicking 7 unanswered goals in 14 of the last 20 minutes of the contest to run out winners by 46 points at the final siren.
Definitely a disappointing result which had loads of positives from new players in the side along with our clear resilience to hang in for 3 and half quarters. Some moments in the third may have provided that valuable spark of momentum we had work so hard to create but unfortunately that’s footy.
We will again review and look to next week.

B Grade Match Report: Round 13 v Glenunga
This week we were back at the quarry, looking to atone for the previous week's performance. We had set ourselves the challenge of playing four strong quarters of football against a side that has featured in a couple of grand finals at this level in recent years. With a finals spot still up for grabs, we went into the game looking for the win, as always.
Our opening quarter was a real shock to the system. We simply couldn't get our hands on the football, and all of our best-laid plans were thrown out the window. We found ourselves 32 points down at the first break, making it one of our most disappointing quarters of the season.
In the second quarter, we started to claw back some territory and finally got our hands on the football, which helped stem the flow of the game. The lads' tenacity and ruthless approach were a pleasure to watch, and had we taken a few more of our opportunities in front of goal, the margin could have been much closer at half-time.
The third quarter was very similar to the second. It felt like if we had rewarded ourselves for our hard work, we could have really challenged our opponents. Despite our improved effort, we still went into the final break trailing by 35 points.
At the final change, we spoke about drawing a line in the sand and giving ourselves every chance to make a run at the game by taking our opportunities. Unfortunately, we still couldn't convert often enough to reduce the margin, but the group certainly never rolled over and kept fighting until the final siren.
While we missed out today, it's important to remember that we were 32 points down after the first 15 minutes of the game and ultimately lost by just 35 points. While we're not satisfied with the result, we must take confidence from the fact that we matched our opponents for the remaining 85% of the contest. We can compete at this level, and we must never stop believing.
In the past, we may have rolled over in a game like this, but this group dug deep and showed the grit, resilience, and determination to fight until the very end. Our attention now turns to another quality opponent next week. The lesson is simple—we must start better, take our chances, and play with the same intensity from the opening bounce.

No greater feeling than waking up on a Saturday morning knowing that weather forecast is 18 degrees and sunny. No rain. And what better way to enjoy your Saturday morning fix than playing at the Primetime slot of 10:15am at the real home of football, Campbelltown Memorial Oval. We welcomed a Glenunga outfit that we’re going into the game with some good form and a solid win over St Peter’s the weekend before. Unfortunately we had five changes to the team from last weekend’s game and then another change with an hour to go before the opening throw up. Not ideal, it is what it is. However, ‘The next man up’ mentality has proven to be for useful for the team this year and gives guys an opportunity to stand up in times like these.
Although the team went into the game with a lot of confidence and looking to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow loss at Port District’s we didn’t start particularly well. Credit to Glenunga for getting on the front foot early, we struggled to get possession of the ball and weren’t able to get the game on our terms. Coming in at quarter time, the energy was a bit flat, but the team knew that they had to start asserting themselves on the game. Luckily in the second quarter we were able to get the game on our terms. Although we dominated inside 50’s, our polish going inside forward 50 was a bit off, resulting in us not being able to put damage on the scoreboard to reward the team’s efforts.
The 2nd half produced the same outcome. Dominating in all aspects of the game however we weren’t able to put damage on the scoreboard. A little disappointing however a win is a win and two points is two points. Congratulations to Luca Saccone who made his C grade debut and did a great job in the ruck.
James McGuinness was best on ground. Jimmy had acres of space for most of the game. Racking up the disposals and using the ball efficiently. Jimmy’s game had been simmering for a while and the finish product showed on the weekend the damage he can cause around the ground for the team.
Zac Aufderheide played his best game for the year. Intercept after intercept. Really took on the leadership role down in the back half and produced a very good game.
Sam Warren was our captain for the game and really led from the front. His pressure and voice around contests were elite. Wazza’s grunt work in and under packs were vital to the team’s success on the day.
Brad Warren had another successful outing at FB. Standing on a guy named ‘Tuna’ and was literally double the size of Brad. With a whole lot of confidence Brad ate him up and then spat him out. Did an incredible job.
Thomas Matsis needs to stop playing well because there is nothing else left to say about his game and what he has produced thus far this season. Absolute specimen!
Great result by the team. We look forward to another huge match against Golden Grove.

D Grade Match Report: Round 13 v Golden Grove
Rocs on the road this week taking on Golden Grove in an early morning timeslot, much better weather conditions for the players with no rain in the last few days.
Rocs Academy needing a win to reignite our season, started with some excellent team play from the first bounce and immediately found some forward targets, assisted by some ruthless finishing in front of goal keeping the scoreboard pressure on Golden Grove. The Kookaburras gradually increased their possession tally and created some dominant control of general play; Rocs backline were relentless in their defending and linked together to hold back the Kookaburras forward entries and create forward movement for the Red & Blacks.
As the first half of a great game came to a close both sides would be pleased with their teamwork and fluent passages of play, but Rocs were the more accurate team to hold a handy 16pt lead.
1/2 time scores Rocs 7-1 (43) vs Golden Grove 4-3 (27)
The third quarter developed into a relentless battle with both teams trying to control contested possession and despite Rocs best efforts we struggled with accuracy around goal setting up a frantic last quarter contest.
3/4 time scores Rocs 9-6 (60) vs Golden Grove 5-5 (35)
The final stanza produced some harrowing moments as Golden Grove turned up their intensity and created many attacking plays to challenge a tired and exhausted Rocs. The Kookaburras tried their best to close the deficit, but a desperate Rocs worked hard enough to hold on for a much needed 10pt win.
Final Scores: ROCFC 10-6 (66) defeated Golden Grove 8-8 (56)

E Grade Match Report: Round 13 v Golden Grove
Top vs Bottom and it was one of those days. 10 in 10 out on Thursday night we went in with 21 players. 3 pulled out Saturday morning probably hungover but our dentist Dec Candy put his hand up and came to help. Starting with 18 of course we lose a player due to a hammy. 17 on the field but they were still no match. Fanta had 6 on the board by qtr. time probably should have been 10. We dominated all over the ground led by J-Mac in ruck and Mitch Warren in the middle, well supported by Tim Lewis and Henry Dawson off the half back line. Craig Holm was excellent up forward feeding Fanta.
Second qtr. we received our first yellow card for the season. Honestly what a joke it was. Won’t go into specifics but some people need some sort of professional help. Even with 16 we still dominated with Fanta getting to 10 by half time. Everyone was contributing around the ground we just tired a bit.
Third qtr. interesting again our second yellow card for to be honest nothing, I thought the mercy rule stopped after primary school. Down to 16 again we still dominated across the ground, Blake Walker-Roberts was very good, and Harry Musk had his best game for us.
Fourth qtr. it was kick it to Fanta time, but the poor bloke was knacked from kicking too much, he finished with 14-6. Pretty much a nothing game but we’ll take the two points, well-done to all who played, a great team performance.
As I have said many a time we don’t travel well. Back at the quarry this week, we have our keg lock in match and our pasta afternoon.
More to come, I’d say some big ins this week.
