A Grade Match Report: Round 3 v Port Districts

Everyone would acknowledge “a week is a long time in footy” and that more often than not “ you get what you deserve”. Both of these football cliches and  several more which will remain inside the sheds typified our output on Saturday against the reigning Premier.

From the opening bounce our opponents, out worked and out played us ultimately denying us any real opportunity to control the ball and the game. While the conditions were less than perfect, they were the same for both sides with our opponents playing to the conditions from the get-go enabling them to build scoreboard pressure at every break.

Their dominance at the contest and their ability to  camp the ball in their front half for most of the game provided the perfect storm which we are unable to arrest at any point in the game leading to a heavy 70 point defeat at the final siren.

A serious lesson which we must and will learn from as we look ahead toward round 4 next Saturday.

B Grade Match Report: Round 3 v Port Districts

Round 3 was all about telling our own story. Coming into the game, we knew we were up against a strong opponent—last year’s Grand Finalists who were unbeaten to start the season. It was always going to be a challenge, but our focus was on playing our way and pushing for the win.

In the first quarter, we allowed them to get out to a five-goal lead. Unfortunately, it was largely our own doing, with six costly turnovers leading to scores from seven of their shots on goal.

The second quarter saw a strong response. We made a few adjustments around the ground and took much better care of the ball. As a result, we outscored our opponent by three goals and reduced the margin to just 14 points at halftime. The most impressive aspect of the quarter was the fight and resilience the lads showed to work their way back into the contest.

The third quarter was a real arm wrestle. Both teams managed two goals, with neither side giving an inch. Our pressure remained strong, particularly in red time, where the group produced some of their best defensive efforts of the game.

Heading into the final quarter, we made it clear we were playing to win. We closed the gap to within 10 points and took some risks to try and get over the line. In the end, our opponent managed a couple of late goals, largely a result of us rolling the dice in search of victory.

While we’re never happy to lose, there’s plenty to take away from the performance. This young group showed great determination to fight the game out, and we can take confidence in knowing we can match it with a top side on any given day.

Final Scores: ROCs 7:4 (46) defeated by Port District 10:10 (70)

C Grade Match Report: Round 3 v Port Districts

After having two impressive wins against some very average opposition, round 3 presented the Primetime Ballers with the difficult task of versing one of last year’s grand finalists, Port Districts. Although the last two games were blow outs, we as a team believed our game staked up against arguably the benchmark in the competition.

The first quarter we were kicking against a strong breeze. We as a team played smart football and competed well in all contests even though it was a low scoring affair at the end of the first. You would think having a strong breeze behind us heading into the second quarter we would be able to capitalise on the scoreboard. Unfortunately it was quite the opposite. Port Districts scoring five goals to zero in the second quarter. As a team we lost our structure, lacked run, skill execution wasn’t where it should be and the amount of undisciplined actions resulting in free kicks down field cost us dearly. Mentally by half time they were in our heads.

Credit to the team after half time for not dropping their heads and competing hard. This wasn’t a reality check, but it was a reminder to the team we aren’t there quite yet. We still have levels to grow and learn as a team and that there is plenty of time to do just that.

Final Scores: ROCs 2.7 (19) defeated by Pt Districts 10.9 (69)

Goal Scorers: Adam Greenwood 1 & Dylan Matthews 1

Best Players: Harrison Twiggs, Sam Warren, Fabian Di Lulio, Marshall Nitschke and Adam Greenwood

Round 4 takes us to Glenunga where the team will look to regroup and respond with a strong performance.

D Grade Match Report: Round 3 v Henley

Overcast skies and drizzling rain greeted the travelling Rocs Academy in an early morning clash against Henley Sharks to kick off Rd 3.

The Sharks started with great energy and kept the ball in their attacking zone. Rocs were caught out of position despite kicking with a blustery wind & through well organised teamwork & fierce pressure found momentum to control general play to set up repeated forward opportunities. Rocs run & handball to advantage created some excellent teamwork as the first stanza ended.

1/4 time scores 2-2 (14) vs Henley 0-1 (1)

Rocs had to work with greater effort to create forward opportunities into the wind and defended gallantly to restrict Henley's momentum with the strong breeze, doing enough to hold onto a handy lead by the end of the first half.

1/2 time scores Rocs 5-3 (33) vs Henley 2-7 (19)

The second half developed into a low scoring game with Rocs having control of general play but were unable to convert our opportunities but still did enough around the ground to establish a match winning 30pt margin as the final bell sounded.

Final score ROCs 8-10 (58) defeated Henley 3-10 (28)

E Grade Match Report: Round 3 v Lockleys

A huge danger game, 15 changes made through the week.

As I said in ‘23 the ROCs don’t travel well. I rattled the tin and the old warhorses helped out.

Bridgey and Litts came back in but debuting for as was Sam Moten and Michael Boffa. They didn’t disappoint with both producing excellent games.

The game itself was a tough in and under battle. Lockleys were keen to win, and I think we dug really deep and had our best win thus far this season.

J-Mac and Tim Lewis both continued with their excellent form, Sam Moten played a great first up game, and Daniel Franzon produced some very strong body work. Young George Kemp and Tom Grant debut for us providing extra run, and Pat Russo loves to run down from the back pocket to kick goals.

Peter Sianis was given the hard task of CHF and battled hard all day. Dawson was good and put the ice cream on the cake with 2 goals.

Final Scores: ROCs 5.10 (40) defeated Lockleys 4.9 (33)

Goal Scorers: H Dawson 2, A Cream 1, P Russo 1 , M Boffa 1

Best Players: J Mac, Lewis, S Moten, Franzon, G Kemp, Sianis.
