A Grade Match Report: Round 2 v Payneham Norwood Union

Round 2 presented us with our first away game of the season against Payneham FC. After the mature performance from last week the focus was on ‘Maintaining the Standard’ in what was set to be a challenging away clash.

With the agency of a swirling breeze at the opening bounce we set the tone with our characteristic quick ball movement inside 50 which saw our Captain Stef Lanzoni kick the opening goal of the contest. The feature of the quarter was our run and work rate especially from defensive 50. The back 6 as a collective again held out our opponents and on the burst kickstarted some impressive transition from the back half. Lanzoni had set the tone and finished the quarter with a dominant 3 goal contribution and giving us a 25 point lead at the first break.

The break was full of chat and confidence from the impressive first quarter effort, so we reset to  Maintain the Standard going into the second. Surprisingly and without explanation our skill execution fell away, we overused the ball creating pressured chains and countless turnovers by hand and foot. This gave some control and confidence back to the opposition. That said defensively led by Jackson Thomas we held the opposition to a single behind in the quarter, but overall an ugly quarter of footy.

The confidence we had delivered our opponents in the second proved to be the spark they needed to work themselves into the game in the third. Best on Ground Beau Baldwin continued his fine start to the season pushing the standard for the group. Despite a few lone hands in the quarter including Jet Boxer & Xavier Tranfa the energy and our inefficiencies with the ball in hand gave them the confidence and control to build some valuable scoreboard pressure, pulling the margin back to 14 points until a pressure releasing  spectacular goal from Stef Lanzoni kicked us back into action finishing the quarter back out to 25 points.

With plenty of fuel left in the tank across the group we headed into the final quarter keen to control the quarter and finish. Despite our opponents kicking the first of the quarter in busts our run appeared and we kicked our way toward the target 100 points, falling just shy by 6 points on the final siren but securing a valuable victory on the road.

A solid 30 point win which we will review and learn from as we look to next week’s big game against Pt Districts.

Final Score: ROCFC 14.10.94 defeated PNUFC 9.10.64

Goal Kickers : S. Lanzoni 5, X. Tranfa 2, T. McCormack 2, J. Boxer 2, M. Daw 2, B. Baldwin 1.

Best Players : B. Baldwin, S. Lanzoni, J. Boxer, J. Thomas, X. Tranfa.

See you at the footy.

B Grade Match Report: Round 2 v Payneham Norwood Union

Our focus for Round 2 was mateship. On a significant day, playing on Anzac Day, we spoke about the importance of trusting your teammates—there’s nothing stronger in a group than that bond, and this team already has something special in that regard.

In the first quarter, we settled much quicker this week and took a 20-point lead into quarter time.

The second quarter was some of the most impressive football we’ve played in my time with the group. Our setup was excellent, but more importantly, our skills and belief were outstanding. I couldn’t have been prouder of what I was watching. Our delivery into the forward line was a real highlight, with strong hit-up leads and great execution. We went into half time with a 53-point lead.

The third quarter, however, flipped on its head. It was déjà vu, and it hit us hard. We looked like a different side and allowed the opposition back into the game, with six turnovers resulting in scores. We went into the final quarter only 30 points up. While some might see that as a comfortable margin, we knew we couldn’t take any chances and needed to regroup quickly.

Heading into the last quarter, we responded well. We returned to the effort and intent of the first half, got the game back on our terms, and finished with a strong 41-point win.

There are plenty of learnings to take from this game, but I have no doubt this young group will continue to build belief and strive to be the best they can be. A huge test awaits us this weekend.

C Grade Match Report: Round 2 v Payneham Norwood Union

After an impressive outing against Athelstone the Gentlemen representing the C grade were keen to keep that form going heading into our next game against archrivals, Payneham. We knew heading into the game that Payneham will look to make it a physical game and that any looks going forward with the ball won’t be easy.

After a little bit of a sluggish start in first 10mins of the first quarter the guys responded. Our direct ball movement forward of centre gave our tall timbers good opportunities and we were able to lock the ball in our forward half for majority of the first quarter.

For the remainder of game we (The Primetime Ballers) were able to keep the game on our terms and really restrict Payneham’s ball movement out of there back 50. As a team we really wanted to focus on being structurally sound and keep being aggressive moving the ball forward. As coach, I think we did that for majority of the game but still believe that this team has more levels that are yet to be discovered.

Special mentions to Lewis Matsis and Adam Greenwood who worked hard all day and made their physical presence known. Especially Greeny when receiving a yellow card from the umpire that he says, “the umpire gave it to the wrong ROCS player”. He will get the chance to appeal his fine to the fines committee on Thursday night.

Tommy Matsis was by far the best player on the field. His run and gun forward of stoppage was unmatched and really put all of his opponents to the sword. We rolled out the red carpet for Ned Carey and boy did he deliver. 6 goals if you don’t mind, he was super strong in the air and made light work of his opponents. Great to have Ned back playing football and having fun. Daniel Cook made the most of his opportunities up forward as well as pinch hitting in the ruck. Competed hard in the air and really nailed his second and third efforts. James McGuinness worked hard all day across the half forward line taking some really strong contested grabs and playing a really solid brand of two-way football. Riordan McNamara got plenty of ball and really broke the lines with his run and carry. The big man even got creative and caught his opponent napping on the job too kick a couple goals himself.

Final Score: ROCS: 20.22.142 defeated Payneham: 4.6.30

Best Players: Tommy Matsis, Ned Carey, Daniel Cook, James McGuinness, Riordan McNamara.

Goal Kickers: Ned Carey (6), Jordan Huppatz (4), Thomas Matsis (3), Riordan McNamara (2), Mlaham Arslan (1), Noah Bischoff (1), Daniel Cook (1), Nick Karagich (1), Harrison Twiggs (1)

D Grade Match Report: Round 2 v Prince Alfred Old Collegians

Rocs Academy hosting long-time rivals PAOC with fantastic football conditions on a rare Anzac Day match @ Roc Park.

The first stanza had plenty of highlights as both teams battled to control general play, but most forward opportunities were stymied by some ruthless defending.

Rocs began to create some better teamwork later in the quarter and forward entries became more effective but wasted some easier shots on goal to end the first quarter with a small lead.

1/4 time scores Rocs 1-3 (9) vs PAOC 0-2(2)

Both teams increased their intensity around the ground and a free flowing high scoring game evolved. Rocs were again off target and despite having control of the game our inaccuracies left the door ajar for Princes to take hold of the game.

1/2 time scores Rocs 4-7 (31) vs PAOC 3-3 (21)

Scoring opportunities were rare during a desperate 3rd qrt as both sides worked extremely hard to gain momentum but were shut down by defensive pressure . Rocs were again working hard enough to hold a small lead at the last break.

3/4 time scores Rocs 5-8 (38) vs PAOC 4-3 (27)

A huge effort by the Rocs all around the ground as our players increased their work effort and linked up with run and carry team play to create forward entries at will in a dominant last quarter. Rocs were relentless around contested possession and despite Princes best efforts the Red & Blacks relentless teamwork ran away with the game to win by a commanding 38 pt margin.

Final score Rocs 9-12 (66) def PAOC 4-4 (28)

E Grade Match Report: Round 2 v Prince Alfred Old Collegians

First home game and the boys didn’t disappoint.

Dutchy Holland debut for us and should have kicked 10, and Craig Holm racked up multiple touches as if he was back in the old days.

It all starts in the middle and our mids delivered . J-Mac was sensational, Dylan Fitzsimmons was fantastic.

Lewis and Spehr dominated and gave our forwards plenty of opportunity.

Pietrobon our new swing man worked both ends of the ground, but in the end our backline is the rock. Clemente back from 2 years off along with Franzon and Nyvlt, McGuinness, Augustine and Simmo were outstanding again.

Let’s keep it going, a lot of more to come. Hill was good in the wing as always.

Final Scores ROCFC 13-24 def PAC 7-2

Best Players:  McInerney , Fitzsimons , Pietrobon, Spehr, Lewis

Goal Kickers: Holland 4, Fitzsimmons, McInerney, Holm 2 , singles to Augustine, Lewis, Pietrobon, Walker-Roberts.
