A Grade Match Report: Round 13 2025 v Broadview

Today was another opportunity to continue the build, on our home deck and in front of our club sponsors. We always chase a fast start and with a break in weather we got the start we wanted, albeit we failed to capitalise on all of our entries. Warton and Butterworth set the tone and control stoppage, and we held our opponents by controlling the ball with Beau Baldwin seemingly everywhere in the quarter. The margin sat at 30 points.

On the back of our first quarter the second was a polar opposite. Our opponents gained ascendancy from turnover as our intensity and ball use dropped away and with clear directive our opponents created run of half back which we failed to adapt to. The main break saw the margin cut back to 14 points.

We changed a few things at the break but the first half of the third there was not much change, Ryan Lymn was a lone hand trying to shift the momentum and our opponents continued to feed off our unforced turnovers. The final break the margin cut back to just 3 points and game on.

During the week we spoke about “ pressure is a privilege” and to run toward it. That was defining at the final break. A collective approach to regain momentum and get the game back on our terms and play our trademark brand . The opening goal from our captain in Stefan Lanzoni from a centre bounce clearance lit the fuse and to a player we had 21 trademark contributions going on to kick 8 straight goals to seal the game with a final margin back out to 40 points.

A huge game for so many reasons and one we will definitely learn from and work toward next week and another opportunity to continue the build.

B Grade Match Report: Round 13 2025 v Broadview

We came into the game this week with our focus and theme on “Headfirst”. We built this week thinking about the game, and the concept that smart players can control aspects of the game even without the ball.

The opposition won the toss and decided to go against the breeze – not often do we see this play out and we certainly took hold of the opportunity heading into quarter time 2 goals ahead. We have now had a consistent month of starting matches well which has been one of our focal points.

In the second quarter we were extremely disciplined defensively against the breeze and readjusted to the conditions well. Once again, we were getting some great ball movement in transition. We managed to outscore the opposition 3 goals to one and went into the major break 4 goals up.

During the third quarter the opposition changed their style of play and were looking to run the ball through the middle with some solid skill. To our credit we adjusted to their movement well and pushed them wide. Whilst it was the tightest quarter of the match, we went into the last quarter 5 goals ahead.

The last quarter saw some fantastic play and output from the ROCS boys. We really turned it on against the breeze outscoring our opponent a further 4 goals to 1, winning the match by 9 goals.

It was certainly our best four-quarter effort for the year so far and was an excellent reward for this young side who are starting to find their feet in this competition.

C Grade Match Report: Round 13 2025 v Broadview

As Bootsy mentioned at Saturday nights presentations, the “Riviera” time of year is a challenging one, with players across all grades overseas in addition to the Flu season and injuries we certainly felt that with 12 changes from the previous week.

With so many new and old faces coming in, the first half we struggled for synergy and this was compounded by the fact that we had some players playing roles that were not familiar just due to the personnel we had, as well as fair to say that some coming in for their first game were a little underdone from a fitness viewpoint but I think we were able to manage this better after half time. It was great to welcome into the group some past A grade legends and leaders who provided direction and guidance across each line.

To Broadview’s credit they were pretty good at centre stoppage and at half time 57-26 reflected their application. We certainly defended better as a team after half time keeping them to 1.1 and we kicked 5 goals in each of the third and fourth stanzas to record a 91-point victory.

Stand in captain Fabian Di lulio in his 50th game for the club played his best game this year with intercept marks and rebound attack. Harvey Wilson backed up his best afield performance last week with another good game off half back. When Hamish Scheid moved to half back, this added to our transition speed, and he provided proactive run and energy to break lines in clearly his best game for us. Fair to say we had some structural issues at times and were caught out of position on occasions; the better teams will hurst us so something to focus on.

Whilst we weren’t as dominant on ball, we ended the day with winning the tackle count which indicates a willingness to apply pressure when the scoreboard is well ahead. Greeny and Tommy Matsis led the charge at stoppage and then hitting the scoreboard when resting forward. Terrific to have one of our club greats Craig Holm train and play with us giving is some midfield cover, together with Nick Scheid who gave us some strength around the contest.

It was the 4th time this year we had 11 different goalkickers. Led by evergreen and Stalwart Paul Fantasia who kicked 5 and handed over many others. The synergy with Kara in the forward line provided not only key targets but also direction and structure. James McGuiness also came in for his first game and was able to impact with forward craft and was a welcomed inclusion. Sam Carey fresh from sharing Wieu’s barber during the week provided us with some marking power in the last quarter after sharing ruck duties earlier on. Kez and Sam Wakelin provide great energy and enthusiasm when in the team and we wish them well in their return to school duties.

Thank you to Paul Swanbury and the committee for honouring our valued sponsors and past presidents on Saturday. Terrific to meet some new sponsors as well as familiar faces who are now backing the club financially with their business. I urge all in the ROCS community to support our sponsors and refer them when the opportunity presents to use their services.

D Grade Match Report: Round 13 2025 v Adelaide Uni Black

Rocs Academy on the road this week with a massive challenge to match it with 2nd on the ladder and perennial antagonists Adelaide Uni-Black.

Rocs started with the aid of a swirling breeze in drizzly conditions and tried hard to play with some fluent ball movement but could not break away from contested possessions although having control of play in a tough & hard physical clash. Rocs working hard to create forward opportunities failed to make the most of our early dominance but held Uni-Black at bay with our inform backline linking up to create fluent play's forward.

1/4-time score Rocs 1-3 vs Uni-Black 1-1

The 2nd & 3rd stanzas were more of the same as both teams played with some great teamwork but struggled with the high pressure around the contest & found ways to the scoreboard hard to find. Both sides were fairly exhausted from the constant pressure around the ground as the momentum switched & the lead changed many times with Rocs back in front by 3/4 time holding sway by a slender 4pts.

3/4; time score Rocs 2-7 vs Uni-Black 2-3.

The final qtr. started with Uni-Black controlling the flow of play & had the Rocs Academy reeling with back-to-back goals in the first few minutes before Rocs regrouped & challenged for the lead in a tense & desperate game. Uni-Black hit the front again with only a few minutes left but Rocs forged forward to reclaim the lead & holding on desperately until the final siren sounded winning a massive game for season 2025.

Final score Rocs 5.7.37 defeated Uni-Black 5.5.35

A fantastic finish to a great game that featured 4 Warren Brothers pulling on the Red & Black jumper to play together for the first time as Brad and Mitch were joined by "on loan" twins Sam & Tom to help their teammates to a great win. The Warren Brothers were cheered on by a multitude of family and friends who braved the conditions to see their boys in action.
