A Grade Match Report: Round 10 v Payneham Norwood Union
Round 10 is pivotal every season as it marks the start of the second round of matches. We had had the benefit mid-week to review our first 9 along with a session Dave Arnfield to consolidate our behaviours and trademark .
A fast start and a four-quarter performance is always a high priority in every game and today was no exception . The opening centre bounce was a clear snapshot of what was to develop as Butterworth , Warton , De Matteis , Dnistriansky and McCormack got to work kicking the opening goal in under a minute from the siren. Our opponents then countered with the next in under 3 minutes. Then with composure and clinical ball movement on the back of ruthless pressure we went on a burst of a further 9 shots on goal finishing with 7 majors and a 38-point lead at the break.
We were searching for four quarters which we discussed at the break. We hit the ground hard lifting the pressure dial again. Best on Ground midfielder Xavier Tranfa (who finished the game with 4 majors of his own) was dynamic creating havoc and providing countless forward entries which were seized on by the likes of skipper Stefan Lanzoni up forward and we continued to build the scoreboard posting a 51-point break at halftime.
Job not done and a clear focus on 4 quarters was a KPI in the rooms. Ryan Lymn and Charlie Kemp, along with Tullio De Matteis leading the back 6 and debutant Jack Michalanney all combined on the back of continued pressure and 21 playing their roles during a quarter which was an arm wrestle in comparison to the opening half. The final break we held a 50-point lead.
The final quarter we were keen to finish off strongly. Our dominance from stoppage and trademark pressure gave us the opportunity to play the final with the ball camped in our front half as we continued to build the scoreboard with Lanzoni icing his 7th we had pushed the final margin out to 69 points in what was our strongest return for the season.
Club Coaching Legend Paul Shadiac who we sadly lost during the week would have been satisfied with the players performance.
We again look to learn and continue the build.

B Grade Match Report: Round 10 v Payneham Norwood Union
We came into the game this week with our focus and theme being “Fundamentals”. We built this week around executing our fundamentals for longer periods during the game.
We were the better side for the first quarter, unfortunately we did not put the results on the scoreboard. The coaching and playing group all agreed that scoreboard pressure will help us moving forward, and our focus on executing those fundamentals will be critical.
In the second quarter we broke even for the and the need to move some players around due to injury did not seem to unsettle us too much. After half time we had some momentum but let a couple of rebound goals get scored at crucial times.
In the final quarter we faced a familiar scene of chasing the game down but weren’t able to capitalise on our opportunities. The want and desire are there within the group and once they peak there will be no stopping them.
Another tight loss. We spoke about letting the hurt “hurt” as it will make us stronger and we reset with positive energy heading into next week.

Before I sat down for my Keto inspired egg and bacon frittata the IPhone13 was pinging uncontrollably with more withdrawals than the SkyCity ATM. Avlonitis, Brasher, Ismail were all ill and Bridge Urban Constructions Project Manager Matthew Mezzini was apparently enjoying himself in Crown in Melbourne!
With a view to not disrupt the D grade too much, we sought to bring up a couple that could at least provide some midfield assistance and thankfully Tom Grant and Hamish Schied who rolled up half-way through the first quarter put their hand up to help out. We also welcomed debutant Thomas Griffiths for his first game in ROCS colours and what an exciting debut it was.
It’s probably fair to say that with the magnets thrown around pre-game, we were a little unsettled to start and clearly PNU are a very different side to that of Round 1, and they came out firing in the first and led by a goal at quarter time. Our Second quarter was exception, kicking 6.0 to 3.1 to head to HT with a 9-point lead. Following the break we continued to control general play and kicked 8.6 to 3.3 after half time to finish 44 points the winner.
Defensively after half time we were better organised and with Fabes joining Tim Lewis, Cookey, Hilly, Zac Auf, Bisch and the angry Danny Leonard, we shut down their key forwards and repelled with vigour. Lewis Matsis is in career best form and with brother Tom and Debutant Thomas Griffiths led the midfield assault. Sam Greenwood led the tackle count in the absence of Dion and was aggressive at ball and body. Sam Warren added some forward craft to his midfield prowess kicking 2. Hamish Schied rolled up late but was impactful on ball in his rotation, the best he’s played at C Grade level, aggressive, quick and first give was exciting to watch.
The most pleasing thing was how our forward line functioned with Kara and Cav with their contested marking and providing the connection link forward of centre and inside 50 and Amer creative at FF after hurting his hamstring in the first stanza. Sam Carey provided us with a good tall target too and kicked a fine goal to the Guy Sebastian end at a critical time.
Max Aufderheide was the Barometer for this week and with PNU’s bigger bodied Rucks provided real drive and contested strength at stoppage after half time.
Goal of the day was the team goal with F1 ball movement in the last qtr. which ended with Jaedyn Smith clean finish. An absolute picture of transition from half back to goal.
Highlight of the day was the similar F1 movement which ended with Wieu kicking his first goal for the ROCS and the entire team running from everywhere to get around him!

D Grade Match Report: Round 10 v Tea Tree Gully
Rocs on the road this round, taking on longtime rivals , reigning Premiers TTGully FC in drizzly cold conditions to start the contest.
Rocs Academy had a host of players unavailable this week putting the pressure on the many 1st or 2nd year team members to take on the best opponents there is in our competition - Gullies started the game with a quick couple of goals, Rocs were relentless in our pressure around contested possessions and formed some slick teamwork to kick a great team goal , from this moment on the game became an excellent fast paced contest with impeccable goalkicking from both sides as the inexperienced Rocs kept working hard to stay in touch with the Gullies in a high scoring first term. 1/4-time score Rocs 4-0 vs TTGully 7-0.
The second stanza proved costly to the end result as Rocs struggled to create many fluent plays with TTGully capitalising on any turnover to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Rocs inexperienced backline was under siege most of the term but stood up to the challenge and repelled many of Gullies forward opportunities.
1/2-time score Rocs 4-1 vs TTGully 10-5.
The third term started as a resurgent Rocs playing run & carry football with opportunities everywhere and pleasingly played with brilliant teamwork to kick the goals needed to get back in the contest. Holding Gullies on the scoreboard to keep in touch by 3/4 Possibly the Rocs best team effort for the season so far.
3/4-time score Rocs 9-1 vs TTGully 12-7.
Rocs managed to match the Gullies early in the final qtr. but could not keep the pressure on the ball carrier for long periods, with the ladder leader's booting away to win a fantastic contest overall.
Final score Rocs 10.03.63 def by TTGully 17.09.111
