A Grade Match Report: Round 9 v Port Districts
The final game in the first round of the season against the reigning premier in the division on their home deck was another opportunity to perform against the benchmark.
We had worked during the week in review to again build our game our trademark and respond from our recent outing. This was in back drop of a milestone game for one of the clubs favourite sons in Will Mead who was set to play his 150th game for the club.
The conditions were perfect for footy in spite of the home ground’s temporary change room facilities we were again chasing a fast start.
The opening quarter was an arm wrestle early and we gained a firsthand insight into the speed of ball movement our opponents were bringing. Our pressure and contest method were trademark from the start, and we kicked the opening goal of the game against the flow of play. The speed of the game was at another level and our back 6 were holding strong led by the ever reliable and creative Tullio De Matteis and 150 gamer Will Mead. The deficit at the break was just 9 points.
The second was inspiring and close to our best quarter in all facets of the game for the season. We out played our opponents with our characteristic pressure and our ball movement was outstanding. Tommy McCormack along with Stefan Lanzoni put on a clinic inside forward 50 rewarding our back 6 and midfield with 5 straight unanswered goals for the quarter pushing us out to an 18-point lead at the main break.
Full of confidence and belief we went into the third keen to build on our second term. Paddy Dawson was racking up possessions at will and keeping us in the contest, with Hayden Swanbury who kept his opponent goalless and Matty Dnistriansky playing an outstanding role we held our nerve despite the mounting pressure from our opponents. A slender 8-point buffer at the final break.
The opening 10 minutes of the final was fierce , our opponents desperate to bridge the gap , we pushed again and had the first three scoring opportunities for the quarter which unfortunately we were unable to take. The third of which was the opening our opponents were searching for and they went coast to coast for a goal against the tide. They had the momentum; the remaining 16 minutes was challenging with their experience coming to the fore despite best on Ryan Lymn’s gallant efforts we were unable to move the ball from our back half with our opponents finishing stronger to take the game by 17 points.
It was a gallant performance with so many positives to take away and so much to learn from.
We must again review, learn and build to get better again next week.

B Grade Match Report: Round 9 v Port Districts
We came into the game this week with our theme being “War”. We built this week around going into battle with your teammates and funnily enough we arrived at the ground to temporary change rooms that encompassed our theme - a very small and uncomfortable hut.
We owned the first 10 minutes of the match, keeping possession in our front half but managed to only score 1 point. Through an unfortunate turn over our oppo scored a goal against the run of play which kicked them into gear. Whilst we took the fight up early, we unfortunately conceded another 5 goals.
In the second quarter we fought back winning the quarter - albeit by a point but it showed some great resilience from our young group not to roll over and concede the game. The third quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle with our oppo and we showed some good signs from our group as we went a couple of players down through injury.
In the last quarter we chased the game once again after a discussion about the need to be brave, and the lads certainly went about that by scoring 3 goals quickly. We could have kicked a couple more with opportunities that unfortunately were not on target. We went on to win the quarter which is once again a great indication about this squad’s fight and determination at this level.
There is no easy game in this competition and we lead into Round 10 after seeing each opponent once with the clear goal to turn the tables on our Round 1 result with a win.

C Grade Match Report: Round 9 v Port Districts
Port Districts at Largs Reserve is one of the toughest road trips in Div 1. They are a strong club with depth of talent in all grades and sit second in C1.
With Nick Karagich a late out, we were forced to shuffle to things around with Max Aufderheide moving to CHF and Cookey to FB. We were already light on the bench and when we lost Dion Bria to a head knock halfway through the 2nd term, we were down a midfield rotation, so to get the result we had numerous challenges to overcome in addition to the obvious facilities challenges faced whilst Port Districts undertakes a redevelopment.
We started well into the breeze and our pressure and attack on the ball and body was by far the best it’s been all year, Barometer for the day Anton Slivak set the tone with courage. The game was very much an arm wrestle, old fashioned footy with fierce tackling and body work. Our 3rd term for me was the best term for the year. We were under enormous attack as PD with a strong breeze went all out assault, however we stood our ground and repelled and held the dam wall preventing it from bursting. With a slender lead at 3Qtr time, we needed to score early to drive ascendency, and we created the first 4 chances in the last but failed to convert. PD then scored on the counterattack and despite 2 late goals, we fell short.
Credit to the midfield group led by Lewis Matsis and brother Tom who were outstanding. Adam Greenwood was back to his angry best, ably supported by Sam Warren and Jerome Avlonitis who despite losing our leading clearance winner Dion Bria, drove the pressure acts for the day. The Defensive 6 were impenetrable, led by Lachie Hill and Tim Lewis wo revelled in the contested scrap, his 3rd quarter fight was visibly lifting to the group. Noah Bischoff played his best game for us at half back and when their No.10 went forward, he took ownership.
Wieu and Max Auf battled their Ruck admirably and were one of the reasons we were able to match so well at stoppage. Jason Cavuoto returned to our side and showed how valuable his experience is and his forward craft. Henry Brasher was energetic and impactful as well but with so many changes to the forward group we are still searching for a consistent structure and complimented personnel.
Disappointing not to get the result but the last 3 weeks have shown that we can compete with the best teams, but you have to take your chances as otherwise if you leave the door ajar they will run through it. This week we did 95% of things right, we just took 5% off between the 5th-15th minute of the last qtr. and that was enough for them to take the win.

D Grade Match Report: Round 9 v Golden Grove
Fantastic football conditions at Roc Park as the Rocs Academy hosted Golden Grove FC to close out the first round of matches.
The Red & Blacks were switched on from the first bounce & with some great teamwork used the footy effectively to create fluent ball movement into a dominant forward line. Rocs were steady in defence and created many opportunities for the team to stream into the forward 50 zone. With many unselfish forward plays Rocs were relentless in their efforts around the goals & powered to a commanding 65pt lead by the half time break.
1/2-time score Rocs 11-6 vs Golden Grove 1-1.
The game tightened up in the second half as Golden Grove increased their efforts around the contested ball, Rocs were challenged but still found ways to improve our teamwork and pleasingly increased our scoreboard dominance to finish the game with a fantastic 98pt win.
Final score Rocs 17.11.113 def Golden Grove 2.3.15
