A Grade Match Report: Round 8 v Golden Grove

Our first game under true winter conditions coming off a bye against an opponent keen to chase  the points was always going to be a challenge. The reward on the outcome was significant and at the forefront of our minds.

Searching always for a fast start we were out of the blocks well with Josh Shute dominating with two goals from the midfield and creating havoc for our opponents. We adapted early to the conditions creating a buffer of 12 points on the siren.

The second was a polar opposite to the first , after an early shot on goal by Stefan Lanzoni which hit the post, our opponents gained full control of the contest. Our first quarter adaptability to the conditions evaporated and we were unable to gain any control with the ball which became camped in our opponents front half for the balance of the quarter resulting in a 6-goal burst and 26-point deficit at the main break.

Some adjustments at half time and a stronger mindset heading into the third failed to materialise any change from the second. Connor Butcher with our best player for the day Ryan Lymn tried valiantly along with James Warton through the midfield and assisted down back by Darci Best did some heavy lifting but all their efforts weren’t enough to stem the flow, and the three-quarter time break the deficit had blown out to a game high 44 points.

The final was our last opportunity to regain some respectability to the scoreboard and ourselves with the conditions turning more severe making any form of quick ball movement a challenge for both sides. We lifted our intensity and finished strongly but the game had been won in the second and third with the final score standing at 36 points in what was a disappointing finish.

A clear reminder as to what this competition can serve up when you don’t adapt and maintain consistent focus.

An opportunity to learn and regroup for next week which we will do as a collective.

B Grade Match Report: Round 8 v Golden Grove

We came into this game this week with our weekly theme being - “Leadership”. We built this week around the Paul Roos story of action in leadership and what would your action of leadership.

Our 1st qtr. did not start well but to the all the players credit we did get some momentum back that did not let us get blown away in the qtr. by going into the break only 2 goals down.

In the second qtr. we once again let our opposition get the ascendancy of creating a gap in score whilst actually dominating the last 8 minutes of the qtr. without putting any scoreboard pressure on them.

The 3rd qtr. we defended our opposition better as a group with some key moments that will define us moving forward. Our will not to roll over and compete against some seasoned footballers was easily a strong point within the group.

The 4th qtr. we chased the game and got back to within 4 goals and if we had of scored the next I do believe we would have had more momentum. We controlled some of the field position for some time but could not break the wall our opposition had set up. Unfortunately, they did score a couple of easy gaol’s in the end as we did chase the game

Our young group continue to battle away and once we just need to put 88 minutes together and we will win a lot more than we lose. These lads are on a journey and next week will be there biggest learning for them all in this competition. They are up for it and will continue to be ruthless every week.

Next week we take another step forward in this competition.

C Grade Match Report: Round 8 v Golden Grove

We faced a team that had similar results to is so far and from the outset it was a hotly contested affair. The first half was a real arm wrestle and saw us take a slight lead at half time.

Unfortunately after half time, we didn’t leave the changerooms and with the breeze Golden Grove kicked 5.3 to 0.1 and despite a last quarter rally we fell short. Credit the GG, they were quick/ skill full and worked hard in transition both ways, exactly how we want to play.

Our defensive unit battled hard all day, unfortunately they were overwhelmed with their mids charging forward to create options and as we didn’t guard the corridor well midfield back, there was plenty of space for them to carve through. GG gave us a lesson in working contest to contest and how we need to maintain the intensity and energy to hold structures and then attack. We seemed to be on the back foot for most of the day, very reactive not proactive and the pressure they put on us saw us fumble and panic under pressure, hack balls to the wrong exit areas and consistent turnovers catching us out of position.

Zac Aufderheide, Lachie Hill and Tim Lewis who captained for the day in the absence of Captain Jack who was out with a bad back battled all day and defended the high ball. Tom Matsis provided the example of the two-way running we need all of our midfield to execute when on ball and was exceptional. Amer battled manfully carrying some sore spots Wieu and in his debut game for the ROCS Sam Carey worked well in Ruck as a combination. Nick Karagich provided consistent contest up forward and his leadership is greatly valued by the group.

Congratulations to Sam Carey who made his debut for the club on the weekend. Sam is a ripping lad and although still at school makes an effort to train with us and is always having a meal at the club on a Thursday night. Congratulations to Sam and we look forward to following your journey.

We need to quickly re-group and bounce back this week and embrace the challenge with a proactive performance at Port District.
