R2 - A's, B's record strong wins and C's home by 20 goals

A's B's & C's Coaches reports for R2.

Round 2 - Coaches Report

A Grade Report

We again started very well and kicked 6 goals to 2 in the first quarter. The second quarter was a real slog where neither side kicked a goal in an increasingly tricky breeze. In the third quarter, they capitalised on our mistakes to draw to within a goal before we steadied and played with real character to eventually run out deserving winners. In this period, Matthew Dawes and Tom Wigley showed the value of experience and hardened bodies. Ben Birch was excellent all day, whilst Drew dominated and with more accurate kicking could've had a huge day. As it was he kicked 6 and had a big say in the result.

A big game coming this week, hopefully we'll have a big crowd as we search for consistency.

B Grade Report

After a disappointing game last week the B-Grade had a big task against Modbury on the weekend. The boys responded in magnificent fashion. The effort and intensity at the ball and the opposition, which was sadly lacking last week, was really pleasing and a good four quarter effort saw us register our first win for the year. We dominated the general field play and controlled the ball well. Unfortuantly our inability to finish off in front of goals kept Modbury in the game for longer than we would have liked.

A great committed team effort saw a lot of players play well. Best player this week was James Jordan, whose attack on the ball from across half-back was inspiring and lifted all his teammates to match his efforts. Ryan Castellano racked up a heap of possessions in the centre and used the ball well all day. Tom Taylor was a welcome return to the side this week and gave some real courageous efforts on the ball. Russell Brooks was a rock at centre half-back and rebounded well and fifth best in the after match awards was Dave Eckert who kicked 4 very important goals for us in the forward line.

Special mentions also need to go to captain John Trenorden and Trent Versace for their efforts around the ground, Patrick Holland had an impact in backline everytime the ball went near him, Nick McDonough in his first game for the b-grade showed a great deal of toughness at the ball, and John Harrison was an important focal point up forward.

We got a great deal of confidence out of the game and look forward to the big challenge against St Ignatius next week.

C Grade Report

A great start to the season for the ROCS C-Grade. In trying wet and windy conditions to have a comprehensive win by over 100 points is very pleasing. The boys know their challenge is to keep to this standard and to improve as we go forward into the season. Our fitness  is a real bonus for us with most of our team training over the summer and the hard work is paying off at the moment. Our team play backing up, providing an option and pressure all over the ground are at a high standard.

The team was lead by Andy O'Connor and Tim Felice who worked tirelessly all over the ground and showed great endeavour to find the ball. Dan Gilbert ran all day from a wing and on the ball to be a very damaging player with two goals. His fitness and skill level are excellent and it shows in his game.

After a slowish start Hadyn Edwards showed his class and skills to great effect. He set up team mates and also kicked a couple of goals. Dan Baillie and Vice Captain Vic Pisanello both played an excellent game and set up a lot of team plays. Our two dominant ruckman, Nick Rendell and Alex Kelly held sway against a big and mobile opposition player. Paul Norris and Paul Bannister worked tirelessly all day to set up play from half back and through the centre, Craig Fabbian, also a Vice Captain, led his team superbly in defence. Big “Wild Man” Nick Bartold, a ROCS recruit from a rugby background  is a very handy inclusion to our forward set up and was rewarded with his first and second goals in Aussie Rules Football. Matt Pedler took his chance and played a fine rebounding game from defence and largely nullified the oppositions best small forward. Sam Millard and Nick Swincer gave us a great target set up in our forward line. Another ROCS first gamer, Jesse Abfalter, continued his fine start to the season and can only get better as the season goes on.

ROCS 200 game plus veteran Simon Emanuele will again captain the C Grade for season 2011.

We have a big weekend ahead this week in a triple header against Old Ignations. An early start will defiantly challenge our squad as will as a tough competitor.
We must be up for the contest!

C-Grade Coach

Below is an additional report from the C Grade game from the Ovingham Club Post-Game Reports published on the SAAFL site

"Rostrevor OC outplays a tiring Ovingham"

Round 2 was played at the Campbelltown Memorial Oval on the 8th April, Ovingham played Rostrevor Old Collegians. The weather was showery with blustery windy conditions. Ovingham was searching for its first away win of the 2011 season.

Players assembled an hour before the game. There was an air of anticipation and confidence to play well. Early game showers made the oval surface slippery but firm under foot.

The first quarter, saw each team contesting for the lead but Rostrevor kicked inaccurately in front of goal. Rostrevor OC kicked 2.5 (17) to Ovingham 2.1 (13).

In the second quarter, Rostrevor OC began to spread the ball wide and dominate the centre line play. While, the Ovingham football team was struggling to counter the ruck and centre line play. Meanwhile, Rostrevor OC dominated the scoring kicking 6 goals and 5 points for the quarter. The half time score was Rostrevor OC 8.12 (60) to Ovingham 3.1 (19).

In the third quarter, the size of the Campbelltown Memorial Oval was becoming a factor in the match. The Ovingham players were struggling with their fitness level and the Rostrevor OC players were continuing to play wide and use their run to move the football forward. Ovingham tried to tackle and pressure the Rostrevor players with a passionate contest but fatigue and player injuries were taking its toll. Rostrevor OC again outscored Ovingham for the quarter. The third quarter score was Rostrevor OC 12.14 (86) to Ovingham 4.3 (27).

In the final quarter, the reality of fitness fatigue and being out played by the opposition, saw the Ovingham players fail to score. Rostrevor dominated the play from the centre line to their forward line. The Ovingham players were running out of ‘puff’ and were chasing opposition jumpers instead of gaining possessions. In the final quarter, Rostrevor OC kicked 8 goals and 7 points to nil.

The final score saw Rostrevor OC run out easy winners 21.22 (148) to Ovingham 4.3 (27).

This 114 point loss had brought the Ovingham Football Club back to reality. The Club now needs to take stock and return to the training track to increase the fitness level of the Ovingham players.

No excuses but game day passion and commitment, cannot replace time spent training on the track.
