A's 10 goal win - Coaches Reports R1

Season 2011 and the A's are away against Athelstone at ROC Park

Coaches Report - Round 1 Uploaded Monday

A Grade - R1 vs Athelstone
We played exciting football in the first quarter to lead 7 goals to one. Therafter we were more patchy, however, pleasingly, every time we were challenged we responded and eventually we finished strongly and were able to win well.

Our best footy was really good and showed how well and how quickly we can run the ball. Better players were Jack Nelligan, Craig Holm, Damien Moyle, Drew Litster, Luke Manuel and Will O'Malley although many contributed well who haven't been named.

Apparently the club has only won in Round 1 twice since 1990-in 1991 and 2003, both premiership years! Hopefully this is a good sign as we travel to Modbury next week looking to continue our good start to the season.

B Grade - R1 vs Athelstone

After a reasonable hit out in the trial games in the past two weeks and a complete squad to pick from we were pretty confident going into round 1. The first quarter was a solid effort with us controlling the ball for a majority of the quarter, however we didn't finish off in front of goals as well as Athelstone did. The start of the second quarter saw Athelstone kick 4 unanswered goals in the first 8 minutes and we were really just playing catch up footy from that point on.

What was really disappointing was the lack of pressure and accountability from most of the players as the game was slipping away. We had too many passengers waiting for others to do the hard work and win the footy. Pressure and accountability has to be the cornerstone of our team as the year continues.

Henry Schilling (who turned 18 on Friday April 1st) played an excellent game in defence for his first game for the Rocs, attacking the footy at every opportunity and being one of the few to man up and make a contest when the ball was in his area. Richie Baker was strong at centre-half forward and made a contest when the ball went into his area and Paul Fantasia was great in patches on the ball and deserved to be mentioned in the best players. The good thing about footy is that we get a chance to regroup and regain some creditability next week.
