Week 2 of Finals

A Grade Match Report: Second Semi Final v Salisbury North

After a solid week of preparation on the track the players were ready for the challenge fully aware of the reward.

The prevailing weather conditions added an extra layer to the contest. The opening quarter was intense with both sides adapting to the conditions and the pressure around the ball. We worked hard to create our opportunities while defending hard to restrict our opponents. At the break we were behind by just 3 points.

The second was a different story as our opponents gained control of the game at the source, with their dominance around stoppage placing huge pressure on our back 6. We were caught out and had to play back half footy for much of the quarter. Again we were unable to capitalise and build some scoreboard pressure. The main break had the deficit out to 21 points.

Regrouping at the break we came out to regain control of the contest. Our opponents in front of their home crowd were not going to be denied, lifting their intensity and run surging the ball and keeping it in their front half. Late in the quarter after a stirring running goal from our captain you could sense a slight shift. The three-quarter time deficit had blown out to 34 points.

With the knowledge that the margin was not beyond our reach the players got to work in the final quarter with some run and dare which had been missing for much of the game. With speed on the ball through the corridor we went on a run of three unanswered goals cutting the margin to 16 points with a number of opportunities going begging. Then a decisive defensive smother as we were again on the burst forced a cruel turnover goal and the run came to an end with the final margin settling the defeat at 33 points.

It was a disappointing result in the end but one we must learn and move on from quickly as we look to next week’s preliminary final and yet another opportunity we have created.

B Grade Match Report: Second Semi Final v Goodwood Saints

We started the game against Goodwood Saints well holding Goodwood Saints scoreless at quarter time - although we dominated the match, we did fail to hit the scoreboard more than we should have. Our mids again worked well with Tom Bradford leading the way and Jake Slivak who we welcomed back was dangerous up forward. Second quarter was again the same but again we found it difficult to score with some unforced errors.

The second half was a little the opposite - with Goodwood Saints controlling the game in the third quarter, we fought back in the final quarter but again let our good work down with poor execution and kicking for goal.

We had some solid performances from El Murada, Dylan Reinbrecht in the mids, and Jackson Petty and Daniel Carbone in defence - Jarryd Ball again worked hard all day for us as well.

In summary I was pleased with the effort, and we know we can compete with them, but firstly our energy needs to go to the preliminary final against Flinders Park who will play a contested game which we need to be focused on from now.

Final Scores: ROCs 4.6 (30) defeated by Goodwood Saints 8.4 (52)

Best Players: Tom Bradford, Dylan Reinbrecht, Jake Slivak, Jackson Petty, El Murada.

Goals kickers: Jake Slivak 2, Matthew Brown 1, Dylan Reinbrecht 1.

C Grade Match Report: First Semi Final v Athelstone

It was win or go home for the C grade this week after the loss to Goodwood Saints the week before.

We had a good week on the track and tried to move on from last week quickly. We were positive coming into the game and couldn’t wait to take on Athelstone.

There was a heavy breeze at Salisbury North oval mainly going across the ground but favored one side. With the wind in the first quarter, we got off to a hot start and our intensity and pressure was red hot early.

We jumped Athelstone kicking the first couple of goals of the game & Dyl Matthews looked dangerous early kicking the first goal. Our midfield was on top early with Ky Haddad & Jacob Scutella getting first use early.

After the hot start we probably didn’t put as much score board pressure as we would have liked and faded towards the end of the quarter. Conceding a few late goals late really hurt and were down by a goal at quarter time.

A disappointing end to the quarter considering our hot start and not ideal with the wind pointing our direction in the first quarter.

Athelstone continued their momentum into the second quarter and dominated much of the quarter as the wind picked up. Jack Hill and Jason Cavuoto, a couple of experience heads down back were instrumental in keeping us in the game and provided some much needed rebound off half back. Tim Lewis was also rock solid at centre half back. We battled hard through the quarter but couldn’t quite move the ball past half forward and ball movement seemed an issue.

We have been a big second half side this year and had the utmost confidence we could overrun Athelstone in the second half. We bounced back in trademark fashion and the boys were up and about. Kicking the first 2 goals of the quarter. We dominated play and the game was played in our forward half. We hit the front halfway through the 3rd and continued to pepper Athelstone with a number of inside 50’s. Some ill-discipline and a costly turnover late hurt and Athelstone kicked another red time goal.

Four points down at the last term we knew we were in for a tough last quarter against the wind. It was tight early in the quarter, but Athelstone took their chances and kicked ahead. Ky Haddad kicked an awesome goal 45mtrs out against the wind with about 8 minutes left giving us a chance. We went on to miss another couple of chances before Athelstone put the game away.

A disappointing result but couldn’t be prouder of the team who battled hard all day. Unfortunately, the season comes to an end, but we saw plenty of growth in individuals and as a team and hopefully we can go a few better next year.

Final Scores: ROCs 7.6 (48) defeated by Athelstone 11.4 (70)

Best Players: Jason Cavuoto, Jack Hill, Ky Haddad, Jacob Scutella, Dylan Matthews

Goals Kickers: Dylan Matthews 2, Tom O’Leary 2, Ahmer Elhosni 1, Ky Haddad 1, Luca Piantedosi 1

D Grade Match Report: Second Semi Final v Tea Tree Gully

Rocs on the road travelling to Tea Tree Gully to challenge the C7 Minor premiers with tragic weather conditions only adding to the huge task awaiting the Rocs Academy.

T T Gully as expected flexed their muscles and played with confidence & despite Rocs rare forward movements had the game in total control to hold a handy lead at the end of the first quarter. 1/4-time score Rocs 1-1 vs T T Gully 3-2.

Rocs tried their best to gain some momentum and despite some terrible disposal & turnovers at critical times managed to work together & stay in the hunt at the 3/4-time break, scores  Rocs 4-4 vs T T Gully 4-11.

The final stanza had T T Gully up & running together to take advantage of the contest & kicked accurately to hold Rocs at bay. A gallant Rocs tried their best but could not match the intensity of T T Gully falling short on the scoreboard by. 20pts.
