A Grade Match Report: Round 18 v Modbury

Round 18 is always a round full of surprises no matter what is at stake. Mindful we have challenged ourselves to win on the road. Heading out to a ground which many had not played on before we were mindful and respectful of our opponents.

Fast start is always important and with slippery conditions prevailing the opening quarter was full of opportunities which we struggled to capitalise on and settle into the conditions controllable  and uncontrollable . The margin at the first break was 4 points.

We reset at the break and took control of the game in the second. The game was played in our front half with our back 6 led by best on ground performer Cam Ball holding back any form of opposition transition. We created repeat entry after repeat entry pushing the margin out by 24 points at the main break.

Momentum shifted in the third with our intensity around the contest dropping allowing our opponents to gain some control. Our back 6 continued their connection holding back a wave of entries enabling us to head into the final break 16 points ahead.

The final quarter our intensity lifted with Charlie Kemp imposing himself on the game in a cameo ruck role. With the intensity dial up we again controlled the ball and the quarter taking our opportunities and sealing the game by 32 points.

As mentioned earlier Cam Ball was outstanding at centre half back intercepting and controlling the air in a best on ground performance. Paddy Dawson started the game with his own ball creating numerous forward entries in an outstanding game. Charlie Kemp’s work rate and contested game both at ground level and in the air was impressive all day. Ryan Lymn played a workman like midfield game creative for four quarters. Back for his first game in a number of weeks Dan McCallum was outstanding along with Cam controlling the back six.

A solid way to finish the minor round . We now reset and prepare for next week.

B Grade Match Report: Round 18 v Modbury

The final game of the minor round was a good result for us, finishing up winners by 107 points.

I was pleased how we played the game right out and got us ready for next week’s match.

All day we dominated the scoreboard and key indicators. Our mid field got to work early providing our forwards with many chances.

Our mids in Dylan Reinbrecht, El Murada, Hayden Swanbury (wing) and in particular Josh Bradford were outstanding. Our defence was well set up and provided much rebound all day in particular Jackson Thomas game at centre half back was excellent.

Again our forwards performed well with Jarryd Ball and Mathew Brown presenting many opportunities. It was pleasing to have 9 goal kickers leading into the  final series as well.

Next week we play Salisbury North at Campbelltown in qualifying final which we are looking forward to. All four grades are playing at Campbelltown so it will be good to see you all there.

C Grade Match Report: Round 18 v Modbury

Facing the undefeated Modbury we knew we had a very tough contest ahead.

The heat was on early with both midfields going head-to-head early. Ky Haddad was impressive early winning a number of clearances and laid a number of his trademark fearsome tackles.

Modbury’s skills were impressive early going a couple goals up, but Luca Piantadosi and Tom O’Leary kicked a couple of goals just before quarter time arresting back momentum.

The fearsome contest continued in the second quarter with both sides not taking a step back. Fabian Di Iulio was immense in the second quarter at full back playing on a quality opponent & seemed to rattle a few Modbury players. Our tackling was outstanding, and we managed several holding the balls in the quarter. As we continued to repel several Modbury’s attacks a couple of lapses in concentration resulted in a couple of Modbury goals late, one being on the cusp of halftime.

The belief in the rooms at half time was strong and knew we could run over the top in second half. We expected Modbury to come out firing but to our credit we continued to match them. Halfway through the 3rd quarter and 3 goals down it was time to start rolling the dice. We began to take the game on by playing on and handball through the Modbury defence. We quickly had the momentum on our side & a nice goal by Felix Brasher before three quarter time got the team fired up.

We managed to win the first centre clearance of the last quarter and kicked an early goal. Harvey Wilson came through with a clutch goal to get us 6 points down. Despite dominating play for the rest of the game and hitting the post we couldn’t quite close the gap and went down by 7 points. Thomas Matsis & Jayden Smith were immense all day on the wings providing great run and carry and won several contests. Lachie Hill in his first game in the C grade for a while was a rock down back and took a number of marks behind the ball. The game showed we can match it with the number one team in the league and gave us great confidence heading into finals next week.
