A Grade Match Report: Round 11 v Goodwood Saints
At the beginning of the year, we spoke about the importance of winning on the road. It is so important to win away in such an even competition. With such a rich history against our opponents we spoke in the lead up to the game how important it would be to adapt to the conditions, start fast and build scoreboard pressure.
For those who were at the game you witnessed firsthand how challenging the conditions were particularly the ground conditions. To quote an old friend of mine and a past player Vin Moriarty “ the track was heavy”.
Given the conditions we went to work and every player lifted their intensity and pressure in and around every contest camping the ball in our front half for the majority of the first quarter. We suffocated our opponents , closing down every exit and our back 6 were “rock solid” from the first bounce. Knowing the goals would be at a premium we controlled the ball and took the opportunities we had created and went into the first break 30 points ahead.
Our second quarter was much the same with the conditions proving challenging to implement our trademark ball movement, but the work rate of the players was so impressive, restricting the opposition and again gaining territory for much of the quarter. Not for the first time we held the opposition to 0.7.7 in a half of football.
With the prevailing conditions, the work rate of the players was to be tested in the second half. We knew the opposition as proud as they would come, and they did. But what was most pleasing was our pressure did not drop off, we made it extremely difficult for the opposition to get separation and the selfless pressure acts from our players was evident for all to see in the remaining half of the game.
We ended the game running out with 35-point win “on the road“ in as mentioned the most challenging ground conditions we have faced this season.
There were outstanding performances across the entire side led by James Warton who defied the conditions to produce a best on ground performance which started again from the centre bounce. He was all over the ground creating so much of our movement from stoppage and kicking goals himself.
Patrick Dawson on his wing must have come to the ground with his own ball, as he was everywhere for four quarters, his positioning off the ball and his ball use was elite in the conditions. Charlie Kemp was again incredible up forward kicking 3 strong goals and providing selfless pressure acts all day in a tremendous display.
Finn Wakelin continues to put together an outstanding first season at the club with an outstanding game in the air and in the ruck. And Kain Cini was incredible down back leading the back 6 with an outstanding defensive game.
A tremendous victory on the road which we will use to build on as we look again to next week.

B Grade Match Report: Round 11 v Goodwood Saints
We knew this would be a challenge – playing Goody Saints at their home plus having our internal challenges.
We did start the game (playing in trying conditions) well winning the first quarter – having everyone playing their role plus some good efforts from Jules Piro (who has played with us before – he is still at school) in the mid field Daniel Carbone leading the way in defence and Adam Whitehead looking dangerous up forward.
From then we slowly lost our way and succumbed to a disappointing lose.
We will learn from this and get better in the coming weeks.
Our defence was under pressure all day – Daniel Carbone as mentioned before played well in the first half at centre half back, in the second half threw him into the mids to generate some life and he played well there as well, Dyaln Reinbrecht also contributed all day in the mids.
Adam Whitehead kicked 2 goals up forward plus did some valuable ruck work as well. Olly Piro played a good game up forward – also Max Daw tried hard all day.
Stuart Greenslade played a reliable game in defence as he normally does, plus Hugo Shute was good.
A result we place in the memory back and learn for it.
Final Scores: ROCs 5.2 defeated by Goody Saints 16.6
Best Players – Daniel Carbone, Adam Whitehead, Jules Piro, Stuart Greenslade, Olly Piro, Dylan Reinbrecht.
Goal Kickers – 2/Adam Whithead, 2/Felix Brasher, 1/Jules Piro.

C Grade Match Report: Round 11 v Goodwood Saints
We turned up to Goodwood Saints this week and could quickly tell it was going to be a low scoring affair with the oval in sludge like conditions.
Facing a Goodwood side sitting one game ahead on the ladder we knew we were in for a highly contested contest.
We got off to a slow start in the first quarter and Goodwood were able to adapt quicker to the muddy & wet conditions. Goodwood dominated the field position early and put 2 goals on the board.
We fought back late in the quarter and had a number of late chances in the quarter but couldn’t convert.
We reset at quarter time and put it on the midfield to step up and win the contest at the source. Credit to them they bounced back, and we got on top in the second quarter. Max Aufderheide got on top in the ruck keeping it in close & Tom Matsis and Jacob Scutella were immense in the middle and were first to the ball surging it forward. We dominated the quarter & Dion Bria popped up taking a great mark and finishing off with a great goal.
At half time we were down but felt we had the momentum and could run over them in the second half. Winning the ball at the contest and getting it forward at all costs was working well.
The game remained a tightly contested affair and the boys weren’t shirking from the contest. Daniel Leonard was immense at the back once again & Fabian Di Iulio in a new role in defence repelled a number of attacks. Unfortunately, we conceded a late goal in the quarter and found ourselves 2 goals down at the last break.
You could tell at 3 quarter time that the boys were up for the fight and the message of taking the game on and not die wondering was relayed. We got off to a cracking start with Dion Bria kicking another one and trailed by 8 points.
We went on to dominate field position most of the quarter, with less than 5 minutes to go Tom Matsis took a great diving mark and goaled to get us to within 2 points. With heavy numbers around the ball the boys didn’t die wondering diving in and sacrificing their bodies for the cause. With 2 minutes to we got a free kick just outside our forward 50, unfortunately we couldn’t score as it went across the face. Goodwood rebounded and were able to rebound and see out the game. We couldn’t get over the line but was a valiant effort losing by 1 point. The result definitely stung and will remain in our minds until the next time we face them hopefully deep in the finals.

Best players: Jacob Scutella, Thomas Matsis, Dion Bria, Josh Massie, Daniel Leonard,

D Grade Match Report: Round 11 v Sacred Heart Old Collegians
Wet and cold conditions as Winter has well & truly set in, greeted the combatants at Roc Park (CMO) this week, as the Rocs Academy hosted long-time rivals SHOC with both sides looking to hold onto a top 3 position this campaign.
The first stanza produced plenty of highlights & lowlights as both sides tried their best to gain advantage as the rain made clean possession extremely hard. Rocs were under extreme pressure and with skilful execution managed to score the only goal of the quarter to hold a slender 4pt lead at the first break. 1/4-time score Rocs 1-1 vs SHOC 0-3.
SHOC applied greater pressure and managed to work together better to slam on 4 goals to 1 during the 2nd quarter with ROCs unable to cope with the physical presence applied by our opponents. 1/2-time score Rocs 2-3 vs SHOC 4-4.
The second half of the contest was a much better effort from the Red & Black's as we combined with much better teamwork and skilful execution to take the lead & kick away from a determined & physical opponent. Rocs had taken a 3pt lead into the final quarter and increased our lead with a dominant but inaccurate 2nd half storming to a very rare win against our biggest longtime foes.
Final scores Rocs 8-11 def SHOC 6-7.
