A Grade Report Round 12 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Campbelltown

Over the course of this season, we have spoken about the many layers that are required to build a team. Many are obvious, such as training commitment, conditioning, game plan awareness, fundamentals and skill execution and there are more. But there is one element that is crucial in driving toward success and that is character.

For those who attended Saturday’s game witnessed a group of your men execute a game full of Rostrevor character. As coach I was and remain hugely proud of each and everyone of them.

We came into the game with our backs firmly against the wall playing the competitions second placed side on our home deck. We needed a response. I have often said you win games at training. An initiative by the players saw the first ever Captains run held on the Friday before the game. It was here where the resolve was set.

The pressure the players brought to the contest from the first bounce was the ingredient which ignited the side to a first quarter blitz as well as keeping our opponents to a solitary point at the first break. This had set the tone of the game and the pressure benchmark.

As in most games there are momentum shifts which came in the second, but the pressure and the character filled second, third and fourth efforts from the group continued, which built the belief. And we remained ahead at the main break.

The second half was exciting to watch and continued to ooze character from every player. Our opponents kept coming and we kept the belief and continued to rebounded time and time again to hold out for a heart stopping 5-point win.

A victory always is reward from 21 contributions during four quarters of play and we had that on Saturday in a crucial game.

We saw outstanding contributions from all players as I said, however Charlie Kemp continues to grow as one of the best players in the competition. His ability to play and contribute all over the ground demonstrates his elite talent and he was terrific all day.

Our veteran ruckman in James Butterworth and midfielder in Dylan Reinbrecht led from the front giving our forward line multiple looks and opportunities to score along with Ryan Lymn who is emerging as standout midfielder. Tom McCormack who plays a multitude of roles on game day was enormous all day with a display of strong lead up marking, ruck and importantly forward craft resulting in him being involved in many scores as well as our leading goal kicker on the day and now for the season to date.

Special mentions to Jake Slivak, Jett Boxer and debutant Elliott Murada all of whom provided critical contributions during the game.

A game full of character and one we need to use and build on moving forward to our next opportunities.

Final score : ROCFC 9.8 (62) defeated PNUFC 8.9 (57)

Goal kickers: T. McCormack 3, J. Boxer 2, P. Dawson 1, D. Fitzsimons 1, C. Kemp 1, D. Reinbrecht 1.

B Grade Report Round 12 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Campbelltown

We had built this game up to see where we are at as a team but unfortunately the result was disappointing.

We started ok only 10 points down at the first break – the next two quarters they were far to strong and good for us in every facet of the game.

To our credit we stuck to the task in the last quarter to outscore them, by two goals.

We played a man down for three quarters with Nick Karagich suffering a bad elbow injury early in the second quarter at that stage he had kicked 2 goals – his lose certainly had an effect on our balance in the forward lines.

To find players who played four quarters was difficult – but again our defence stood up well Jimmy McGuiness and Sam Hearn who was our Captain on the day giving consistent performances.

Jules Piro helped us out on the day with a stunning performance considering he is from Year 11 at school. He has a bright future in football, and I thank him for his effort. I wish him all the best with his footy in the future.

Great to have Lewis Matsis back, he and Tom Bradford tried hard all day in the midfield plus Adam Whitehead rucked all day as we had only one ruckman, his effort was good. Adam Greenwood played well up forward and through the midfield.

Final Scores

C Grade Report Round 12 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Campbelltown

We always knew that coming up against our neighbours of PNU will be a hard-fought battle.

We started really well and had a lot of the ball - but found it hard to convert to goals. Quarter time we had 8 points on the board and couldn’t convert any to goals.

Our second quarter saw our boys straighten up and kick 4 goals for the quarter – but only really a goal up at Half Time.

The third and last quarters Interim Coach Chris Platten had to make some master stroke moves - we were down to 1 on the bench by half time with couple injuries gone for the game.

The boys knew at Half time the job was going to get difficult if we didn’t dig in - enter 2 freak goals by Fabian Di Iluio and Daniel Campagnale respectively along with short burst muscle in the middle by Jack Draper which caused PNU to drop their bundle and the ROCs running out winners at the end of the day.

The team well lead by J-Mac in the ruck controlling the game from every facet all day - along with lots of class from Thomas Hurley and Scott Gilbert with the added hard gut running from Joshua Piantadosi.

They were all very well support by a strong disciplined back line and all the players around the ground doing the team thing.

Everyone knew this was a must win following with our depleted teams we have had in recent weeks.

Loved the work from all and sundry !

D Grade Report Round 12 v Sacred Heart Old Collegians @ Sacred Heart

Rocs on the road this week taking on fierce rivals SHOC in a true 'backs to the wall' challenge. With availability of Rocs players throughout the grades stretching our player pool to the max, the Academy side could only muster up 19 players on selection night. By the 11th hour on GameDay we had gathered together 24 keen & ready Team members with ages from 17 to 47yrs of age to take on 2nd placed SHOC. The opening stanza produced passages of superb quality football by both sides as momentum & link up teamwork led to an evenly contested qtr. 1/4-time scores Rocs 2-3 vs SHOC 2-4.

SHOC came out firing in the 2nd qtr. & surged forward throughout general play dominating the scoring with Rocs backline doing well under constant pressure. The Rocs could not make any improvement on the scoreboard which ultimately was the difference between the two sides. Half Time scores Rocs 2-4 vs SHOC 4-8.

An impressive fightback by the Red & Blacks during the second half as our pressure around contested possession did not subside giving us a chance to stay in touch & actually outscore the home side but despite being able to fightback to trail by 3pts very late in the contest Rocs were kept at bay falling short by 11pts at the final siren.

Final scores Rocs 7-7(49) def by SHOC 8-12(60)
