A Grade R5 vs Henly @ Henley
There are many sayings in footy… “a week is a long time in football”, “your only as good as your last performance” all of which I am sure you have heard at some stage during a season.
I however always talk about “opportunity”. Every time we head to training, every time we head out to play is always an opportunity to learn, to improve and to execute the learnings as individuals but more importantly as a team and a club.
Saturday was another opportunity ! An Opportunity to respond, to execute the learnings from the weeks before, to execute our game style, to build belief and to do all that is required for 4 quarters.
Saturday saw all 21 players take the opportunity that game day presents and each provided a valuable contribution to our best four quarter performance for the season.
The first quarter we settled a lot quicker than in previous weeks and it was Tom OMalley who with a switch from our back half provided us with the spark which ignited the game for us.
Taking nothing away from Henley as they challenged us during the middle part of the second quarter which to our players credit they adjusted accordingly and worked to get the game back on our terms.
The second half and in particular the final quarter saw us control the ball in our forward half enabling us to achieve repeat entries inside 50 creating numerous scoring opportunities for our forwards.
For those who were in attendance you were fortunate as we all were to witness Patrick Dawson’s flawless forward craft game finishing the match with 11 goals from 11 shots, 6 of which were in the final quarter. An amazing performance from a small forward.
Our midfield led by ruckman James Butterworth and mids in James Warton, Tim Baccanello & Dylan Fitzsimons controlled the midfield battle providing repeat entries to our forwards all day.
Defensively we implemented our system at the direction of Tom O’Malley, Luke Manuel and Dan McCallum and as a collective for four quarters repelling many of the opposition offensive plays and transitioning the ball in quick succession time and time again.
It was a pleasing performance and one we must build on.

Final Scores: ROCS 3-6 def by Henley 8-8
Its becoming a trend that we as a group of players and coaches want to change – another defeat on the road by a side that has lost only one game this year.
We are not looking at excuses but more so we need to improve at implementing our game style and structure all game, not just for 2 quarters as it was on Saturday. I do believe we are better then the results are showing currently – but we have work to do.
There are positives each game – which at this stage I’m confident this young group of players are understanding that they must maintain this all game.
We had some honest contributors from our backline – Jimmy McGuiness and Riordan McNamara (Frog) were good in defence all day.
Tom Bradford and Jonah Duperouzel played well in the mids – we lost rotations again due to Jacob Scutella injury prior to half time, which made their games even more commendable.
Tom Snowball up forward displayed what he is capable of.
Best Players – James McGuiness, Thomas Bradford, Riordan McNamara, Tom Snowball, Jonah Duperouzel.
Goal Kickers – Tom Snowball, Dylan Matthews, Jonah Duperrouzel.

We headed to Shark Park facing a top 4 team that hasn’t lost a match in over 2 years. On the track I had given the lads no illusion that this was a huge game for the team’s development. The game was up to expectations, tough, fast, and two sides committed to winning. Make no mistake Henley are good and I think we will be seeing them in September. L Matsis was sensational in the first half clearly our best. We traded blow for blow being even at every change of quarters. 3/4 time we were 1 point up going into the last. Our backline were magnificent, Daniel Franzon, Jack Draper, and Vincent Clemente held the line. Jack Hill was again brilliant off the half-back. Going into the last we were headed for the first time and I was worried. The back line were under siege but along with mids we held them off. J (ray) Huppatz played his best game for the club, Dutchy bagged a lazy 6, not bad for an ex-back man, and captain Timmy Lewis was fantastic at CHB repelling numerous entries and leading the way. M Warren was best afield playing in the mids with a powerful display. A great effort from the whole team and I couldn’t be prouder. But it’s round 5 and lots of work to be done. The freight train is coming, get aboard “the C train”. Special shout out to Poppy Scaife (LOSA superstar) who helped me out as my runner on Saturday.

D Grade R5 vs SHOC @ ROC Park
Huge challenge for the ROCS Academy hosting our fierce rivals the undefeated ladder leading SHOC at Roc Park.
The Rocs started the game with great teamwork and pressure around contested possession, following our game plan perfectly. Breaking away from a persistent SHOC on most occasions to set up fluent forwardline attacks on goal. With our dominant backline setting up play Rocs missed a couple of crucial shots on goal but held a solid lead at the first break. Scores Rocs 3-3 leading SHOC 2-0
Rocs kept the pressure around contested ball & were able to stay in the game until halfway through the 2nd stanza as SHOC won more control over general play, booting back to back goals and stormed back into the contest. Rocs kept working hard to create teamwork and managed to hold on to the lead at the long break.1/2 time scores Rocs 5-4 vs SHOC 5-1
Ultimately the class & cleaner disposal with the ball by SHOC won the contest as our opponents increased their intensity around the ground, with Rocs unable to answer on the scoreboard. A much better game by the Rocs this week, both sides had the same amount of shots on goal as our Team did not give up trying to set up attacking play until the final siren. Final scores Rocs 6-10 (46) def by SHOC 11-5 (71)
