A Grade Report Round 3 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Payneham.
When analysing a game it’s important to put the result and way we played into perspective irrespective of the outcome.
Going into Saturday we knew the game was going to be real test for us with the Opposition being undefeated at this early stage of the season. Prior to the game we stressed the importance of a fast start and scoreboard pressure, which unfortunately we were unable to execute allowing the opposition to control the ball on their terms. Our back 6 were under siege early but manage to restrict the oppositions ascendency at the first break to only 15 points despite numerous entries and opportunities.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle with both sides defensive systems working to have the game played between the arcs for much of the quarter, however we were able to claw back some of the deficit.
The second half is where the perspective analysis comes in. Knowing at the main break we hadn’t been playing the way we wanted and had allowed the opposition to set the tone of the game the players maintained what a would call a stealth like belief.
The third remained a tight contested affair until last 5 minutes or so when you could see and sense a shift in momentum and run which we had been searching for all game. There was a late flurry of repeat entries which resulted in only minor scores but the game had changed. The perspective had shifted.
Our final quarter was in my opinion our best quarter for the season to date. The players increased the intensity and pressure around the contest and began to run the ball in the manor which we become accustomed to as the season unfolds. Our midfield lead by James Warton a clearance beast, Will Mead playing under duress and best afield Ryan Lymn turned the game with the game now being played in our front half.
Jett Boxer (4 goals ) remained a dominant presence up forward and Patrick Dawson looking dangerous gave us a real look with the scoreboard deficit evaporating until a late surge on the back of the quick ball movement and dare from the side saw us hit the front after trailing all day in the dying stages of the final quarter. Unfortunately, the oppositions only score in the final quarter saw them seal the game by 5 points.
As mentioned, Ryan Lymn was dominant for four quarters, Kane Cini and Daniel McCallum held us in the game early along with the back 6 , Jett Boxer with another bag of 4 goals was superb up front and James Warton gave us plenty from stoppage and around the ground all day.
The perspective is we are building in our connection and game style which in spite of the game’s outcome on Saturday was the reason we fought our way back into the game.
We look forward to another opportunity this Saturday at home.

B Grade Report Round 3 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Payneham.
The trip to Payneham resulted in a disappointing loss.
As the final score will tell it was a close tussle all day – but ending in a 5-point defeat.
At half time we lead by 5 points – El Murada who is an important player in the mids could not resume with a leg injury. Even though we were down a rotation for the rest of game we managed to get 13 points up with approx. 4-5 minutes remaining in the game, but a couple of undisciplined acts cost us a goal and from that moment we lost our composure and more importantly our structure and the result unfortunately looked after itself.
It was shattering for the players, but we need to learn for this and move forward to next week.
Dylan Fitzsimmons, Jake Slivak played well in midfield with Jake our Captain playing a brilliant last quarter, Harrison Twiggs ruck work and forward play was very good.
Jimmy McGuiness again played a good game in defence, and Luke Cogswell is getting better each week on his wing.
Ferghus Kernahan bagged another 3 goals up forward, also Jacob Scutella and Max Daw forward work and pressure especially in the first half was excellent.
Tom Snowball played his first game for the B grade this season – he will be an important player for us going forward.
Final Scores: ROCs 9.6 (60) def by Payneham 10.5 (65)
Best Players: Dylan Fitzsimmons, Harrison Twiggs, Jake Slivak, Luke Cogswell, Jacob Scutella.
Goal Kickers: Dylan Fitzsimmons 3, Ferghus Kernahan 3, Dylan Matthews2 & Tom Snowball 1.

C Grade Report Round 3 v Payneham Norwood Union @ Payneham.
A solid win by the boys on Saturday. Instructions before the match was that we must kick straight, and we didn’t disappoint. Game couldn’t start in a better way than with debutant Paddy Baldwin getting the first goal of the match and the lads getting around him.
From that moment on we were in complete control of the match. Special mention to our back line especially Daniel Franzon, Tim Lewis (C), and Jack Hill (VC) who were sensational all match, then going forward Fabian Di Iulio booting 4 goals and should have had 8. Josh O’Leary was unbelievable in the first 15 minutes kicking 3 but unfortunately came off with a knee injury, which we hope isn’t too bad.
Very hard to single out best players the team was very good , Olly Piro was very competitive all day, Mitch Warren solid in the middle, Jayden Smith ran all day, Amer Elhonsi continued his great form but Justin McInerney was magnificent in ruck and set the tone for the win.
Big game coming up at the quarry this week, love to see you all out supporting the C grade early.

D Grade Report Round 3 v Pembroke “Kings” @ Campbelltown.
A massive shower of rain during our warmup failed to subdue a fired-up Rocs invitational side inspired by the return of 6 senior players & cameo appearances from Rocs former A grade inspirational stalwarts Paul Fantasia & Jimmy Jordan.
Our focus has been on creating fluid team play involving run & support & the Rocs were constantly charging forward to outscore the Pembroke Kings . Rocs failed to impact the scoreboard, missing some simple shots on goal. 1/4-time scores Rocs 2-3 leading Pembroke 1-1.
The second & third stanzas produced some inspirational team plays with the only negative - missing shots on goal - even our inaccuracies failed to subdue Rocs brilliant bursts of clinical team play as the Red & Black's held a commanding lead at 3/4 time. Scores Rocs 7-12 leading Pembroke 4-4.
Rocs continued to dominate general play with all players having little bursts of brilliance in a resounding win.
Final Scores: Rocs 9-17 (71) def Pembroke 4-6 (30)

LOSA R3 Report vs Elizabeth @ Campbelltown
Back at home this week we faced Elizabeth who had recorded losses in rounds 1 and 2. After a physical game against North Haven last week, we focused on our confidence in winning contested balls and utilising / creating space to transition.
The team put in a four quarter effort to compete, and win the ball in the air and at ground level. contested ball wins resulted in Sophie Haines kicking three goals in the first quarter, with goal assists coming from Emily Hasler (2) and Issy Burdon (1).
The second quarter Elizabeth increased their pressure and tested our backline again. Ereni Vithoulkas and Sarah Catterwell provided structure as the back six worked together to ensure no goals were scored. Burdon again proving her pace on the wing as an asset, as she fed balls to both Olivia Heard and Amelia Kelly, who kicked their first goals for the day. The midfield worked tirelessly all day on ball to gain contested possessions from stoppages. Olivia Law again proved she was willing to be strong over the ball with many clearances. Physical games by fellow on ballers Stephanie Principe and Hannah Sexton, continued to provide opportunities for LOSA to go forward.
A strong third quarter and a focus on transitioning wider from defence / turnover, Catterwell, Vithoulkas, Burdon and Hannah Ellis looked to really take advantage of the oval width this week. Uncontested intercept marks and quick ball movement on the wings resulted in two goals to Herde who looked dangerous all afternoon. Strong hands inside 50 and a handy 25m penalty took Kelly to the goal line to kick her second goal for the afternoon.
The backline showed composure when tested, and they were tested again and again by Elizabeth who kept finding ways to deliver the ball inside their forward 50 in the final quarter. Sophie Haines kicked her fourth goal from a mark and long range set shot. Although there were many good plays, the ‘Play of the Day’ went to Jacinta Beltrame for her run and carry on the wing / forward flank with a handball receive from Eloise Penny. Jacinta’s kick was marked by a diving Alice Harris in front of the point post. Harris proceeded to play on quickly to kick her first goal of the season and for LOSA. Small forward Amie Westling also scored her first goal for LOSA after roving a loose ball on the goal line.
Although we had a convincing win, for me it was pleasing to see the players come out to training during the week and all understand what we needed to work on after a disappointing loss against a very physical team in North Haven last week. And the response from the team on Saturday against Elizabeth, was not to shy away, but to step up and embrace the physicality. A great team win and one that will give the team confidence heading into our Round 4 against Kilburn.
LOSA 11.6(72) defeated Elizabeth 0.2(2)
Goals: 4 Sophie, 3 Heard, 2 Amelia Kelly, 1 Amie Westling, 1 Alice Harris
Best Players: Olivia Law, Sophie Haines, Ereni Vilthoulkas, Olivia Heard, Sarah Catterwell
