A Grade Report Round 1 v Salisbury North @ Salisbury North.

With three players making their respective A Grade debuts in Ned “ Son of a Gun” Carey, Darcy “The Third” Richards and Jonah “Getaway” Duperouzel the A Grade made the long trek out to Salisbury North full of optimism following what was a solid and productive preseason campaign.

The opening quarter provided all who were in attendance with a small glimpse of the game style we hope to bring this season resulting in us heading into the first break slightly ahead on the scoreboard.

However, over the course of the remaining three quarters we allowed Salisbury North to their credit to dictate the tempo of the game. Our inability to capitalise on the limited opportunities we created increased our opponent’s momentum and scoreboard pressure which in the end proved to be a bridge too far in the final stanza.

Players who provided contributions at stages throughout the game included Will Mead, Charlie Kemp, Tom McCormack with three goals, Ryan Lymn, and our Captain Daniel McCallum.

Clearly not an ideal start to 2023. The strength in the group will be the response.

We look forward to seeing you all at home for Round 2 v Edwardstown.

Final Scores: ROCS 4.11 SNFC 14.14

Best Players: Will Mead, Charlie Kemp, Tom McCormack, Ryan Lymn & Daniel McCallum

Goal Kickers: Tom McCormack 3, Nick Karagich 1

B Grade Report Round 1 v Salisbury North @ Salisbury North.

A tough challenge first up to travel to Salisbury North, we talked about getting a good start but unfortunately we didn’t quite achieve this with a 5 goal to 1 scorecard at the end of the first quarter.

After making some adjustments to the team in the midfield – with our two ruckman Harry Twiggs and Adam Whitehead following their respective ruckmen and getting Elliott Murada to run with one of their midfielders we nullified the match in the next three quarters with 7 goals each for the last three quarters.

Also, we played Fergus Kernahan a deep forward who kick three goals to worry the opponent. Jake Slivak, Dylan Fitzsimons and Harry Wright started to get their hands on the ball to even up the midfield contest.

Even though and defence was under pressure in the first quarter, they also were able to reset in the final three quarters with Hugo Shute at centre half back leading the way.

During the last quarter we got within 17 points with momentum running our way, from then we made some crucial decisions that cost us plus missed targets with hand and foot.

As I mentioned it was a tough first up assignment – we had three players making their debut from school – Hugo Shute, Max Daw and Jackson Thomas who all contributed well.

Also, Elliot Murada and Luke Cogswell making their debuts for the club, plus Dylan Matthews and Adam Whitehead playing their first B grade game.

Even though the result was not what we wanted the effort was sound and as a group we are looking forward to our first home ground game against Edwardstown next week, hope to see all our supporters and families there.

Congratulations to our Team Leaders for the season.

C Grade Report Round 1 v Salisbury North @ Salisbury North.

We headed up north to face Salisbury North in our first game of the year. We were on fire in the first quarter kicking five goals and looking good. Jack Hill was tearing them up on the HBF. Second quarter we found the conditions trying as we were trying to maintain our structure and form. In the second half Salisbury North went man on man which shut down our run and it became a bit of struggle for the boys. Probably a lack of match practice and general fitness and heat took its toll on us. Vincent Clemente was stellar down back, Ky Haddad who was rotating in the middle kicked three goals up forward and Nick Platten was very dangerous also kicking three up forward. Our midfield led by Jacob Scutella and Mitch Warren kept the gap between the sides and helped see us run out comfortable winners. A huge positive to the start of the season looking forward to Edwardstown at the quarry this week.

D Grade Report Round 1 v Modbury @ Campbelltown Oval.

Kicking off the 2023 season in fantastic conditions Rocs hosted Modbury at Roc Park.

With a host of new players starting their Rocs career the team did their best to keep with a fast-running opponent. The Rocs were held up going into our forward half many times with Modbury dominant across halfback , converting defence into attack on goal many times to lead by 3 goals at the long break. During the 3rd stanza the Hawks took complete control of the contest adding 10 goals to set up a commanding lead. Despite our teams’ best efforts & never say die attitude Modbury were too good for over the 4qtrs , running out winners by 90pts.

Final scores Rocs 4-10 (34) def by Modbury 19-10 (124)

LOSA - R1 vs Modbury

Loreto 4.4(28) defeated Modbury 2.5(17)

All involved were looking forward to Round 1, but none more some that the players after a solid preseason. We spoke about Round 1 as an opportunity to set ourselves a bar, about how we want to play and against a traditionally physically strong side in Modbury.

Round 1 was also a day of many firsts, including 11 players debuting for Loreto and my first game as head coach. The new players included Bethany Ince, Sarah Catterwell, Issy Burdon, Maggie Craig, Amie Westling, Stephanie Principe, Alice Harris, Eloise Penny, Sophie Haines, Jacinta Beltrame and Emilie Hasler. While Burdon, Craig, Harris, Penny and Beltrame also debuted in their first game of football.

The 20-player side selected integrated the newer players with the more experienced across all three lines. The back line included Catterwell with over 160 games in the backline, while 50+ game players Ince, Rudd, Hasler and Haines were played through the backline, midfield and forward line.

A slightly warmer day than expected for late April, meant our preseason conditioning would be tested early. The first quarter produced some highly contested football, with both sides struggling to find and utilise space on the ground. A couple of Loreto opportunities missed in front of goal due to early pressure from Modbury. The first quarter ended goalless, with Loreto 3-points to Modbury 1-point.

The second quarter both teams settled and began to find space with Jana Ivancic winning the ruck taps, while Bella Simpson and Olivia Law found time and space in the congestion to clear the ball into our forward 50. Loreto’s first goal came through Olivia Herde. Modbury were able to goal twice seeing them take a 3-point lead into halftime when we were hand lost some accountability when transitioning from attack to defence.

Changes were made to increase the running power from half back through Hannah Sexton and Olivia Law. The backline would be tested significantly in the third quarter as Modbury got on top on the stoppages. Ereni Vathaulkas stood strong in full back, often the last line of defence and even caught outnumbered. Under fire for most of the quarter, the backline held Modbury to 3-points, and the momentum began to shift our way. We were able to transition quickly from half back using width and our outside runners including the dodging and weaving Minnie Turner. Strong contested hands in Haines and Ince, enabled the team to maintain possession inside our forward half. Herde produced her second goal utilising her ability to hunt the ball, while Ince continued to show class and composure all day and goaled late in the third quarter. Loreto was in front by 6-points heading to the final quarter.

Principe was moved on ball and had an immediate impact as she battled hard on ball, bringing a real physical presence and defensive desperation to the midfield. Principe ensured no easy clearances for Modbury, and began winning her own ball. Modbury’s defensive game was under siege with several Loreto forward 50 entries looked likely to turn into shots on goal. Modbury managed to break the Loreto defence with two fast transitions into their forward 50. They manage to score 1 behind, and then our backline was caught out of position with Hasler and Catterwell working together to saving a sure goal. Herde was able to capitalise at the end of another Loreto surge forward, kicking her third and the final goal of the game. With our fitness well and truly tested in the final quarter, the team withheld the Modbury pressure, finishing 11-point victors.

We travel next round to take on North Haven.

Goals: 3 Olivia Herde, 1 Bethany Ince.

Best Players: Olivia Herde, Ereni Vithoulkas, Bethany Ince, Bella Simpson, Stephanie Principe
