A Grade Report R6
Round 6 saw the A-Grade take two successive wins to one of the most difficult ovals to claim an away victory in the Amateur League, that being Goodwood Oval. In great form themselves and occupying a spot near the top of the ladder, it shaped up to be a terrific game of football between the two proud clubs. We always relish the challenge of aiming to leave with 2 points at Goodwood Oval, and there was respectful confidence amongst the group during the lead-up that this was a possibility.
The match instantly sprung to life in the first, with a very physical, energetic and balanced contest developing. James Butterworth was giving his midfielders first use, and it allowed multiple forward entries to present dangerous one-on-one opportunities. Tullio De Matteis, enjoying a new lease on life up forward, was one to benefit from these opportunities being the games only multiple goal-scorer in the first quarter. At the quarter time break, ROCS led 4.4.28 to Goodwood 2.3.15.
The second quarter mirrored much of the proceedings of the first, with both teams competing relentlessly and having the skill to complement such an approach. Both teams used the ball a little better going forward, and the lead never extended beyond 10-15 points in a back and forth affair. Tim Baccanello was doing some inspiring defensive work at stoppage, which allowed fellow midfielders James Warton and Will Mead to gain valuable metres from clearances and send the ball deep into attack. Against a solid and disciplined defence, Nicholas Murphy looked most dangerous and was causing some problems in the front half of the ground. At the half-time break, ROCS maintained a two-goal lead and entered the rooms leading 7.6.48 to Goodwood 5.6 36.
During the premiership quarter, it became a war of attrition. Both teams succumbed to multiple injuries or niggles which hampered their players. There was a clear sense that Goodwood were not out of the game, and ROCS were never guaranteed to maintain a lead unless they were prepared to fight for it. Goodwood’s midfield gained the ascendency in the third quarter and put our defence under immense pressure for the most part. Luckily, despite their dominance they were inaccurate and kicked 2.7 for the quarter which limited the damage. At the other end, ROCS managed 2.2 from limited entries to hold a slender 7-point lead as the score read ROCS 9.8.62 to Goodwood 7.13.55.
As promised all day, the stage was set for a decisive last-quarter battle. Goodwood started the 4th much like the third, and some surging run and carry through stoppage gave them many chances to score, but again we were fortunate as they missed a few chances they’d pride themselves on taking. ROCs had a positive 5-minute period, in which Nicholas Murphy kicked his 4th goal for the day, and debutant Charlie Kemp kicked truly to give ROCS hope of holding on for a memorable victory. However, Goodwood rose to the occasion and got better as the game came to a close. Transition from defence, along with some periods of real dominance in the middle allowed their forwards to again reap the benefits, and whilst still not taking all their opportunities, they kicked 4.5 for the quarter which saw them deservedly take the points, running out victors with a final score line of 11.18.84 to ROCS 11.8.74.
In the end, it was a tough loss to accept, as both teams could rightfully argue they deserved to win the match. Ultimately, we fell short in crucial periods of the match and allowed Goodwood to play versions of their best football at times which is a high standard to match. Lots of positives to take out of the 4 quarters, and some areas to improve upon which will excite the group. We return to the Quarry this week and eagerly await another challenging contest against Payneham Norwood Union.
Best Players on the day were, in descending order: James Butterworth, Tim Baccanello, Nicholas Murphy, Thomas O’Malley and Will Mead.
Goal Kickers: Nicholas Murphy 4, Tullio De Matteis 3, Charlie Kemp 1, William O’Malley 1, Will Mead 1, Patrick Dawson 1.

B Grade Report – R6
From a scoreboard point of view, it was a somewhat disappointing performance from us.
We as always started the game with a high level of effort but under pressure our disposal and decision making let us down again.
Even though at half time the sores were ROCs 2-1 Goodwood 6-4 I felt we were in the game.
After half time we let Goodwood get to many easy clearances and entries into their forward line hence putting our defence under pressure.
In the last 10 minutes of the game, they kicked six goals to make the final result worst then I thought it should have been.
We ended playing with no bench through injuries in the last quarter – plus we had three late withdrawals on Saturday that made the total of eight changes from last week. We will not use this as excuse as I had confidence in the players that took the field, we could get it done, but it does upset the side.
Josh Massie and Joe Tarca both performed well in the midfield as they have for the season so far.
Harrison Twiggs again rucked with much courage all day, Dylan Fitzsimons and Jake Draper also played well.
Nick Karagich played well down back.
Special thanks to Lawson Nitschke who played 3 quarters of the C grade and ended up playing more than half of the game for us because of injuries.
Final Scores

Goodwood Saints 24-15 ROCS 1-1
Goals Olly Piro
Best: Frog McNamara, Lawson Nitschke, Jazbo Varley, Sam Warren, Ky Haddad.
Not sure what to say other than worst loss I have experienced as a coach. We were out gunned everywhere, outplayed and obviously not good enough. Only positive was the debut game of Olly Piro which was impressive. J Mac and pistol Pete battled hard for us. Sam Warren and Ky Haddad tried their guts out. Credit falls to our best three, Jazbo never gave up, Lawson Nitschke would of probably got best but came off the ground to play in the next game for the B grade. Frog was excellent, acting captain on the day tried all day for a better result.

A massive challenge this round as ROCs Academy side had to respond from a hammering last week and major selection problems as all ROCs Teams were severely affected by the unavailability of players this round. The SOS button was well and truly pushed to all past ROCS players which resulted in two debutants, three supplementary list players, four early returns from injury & four players playing 2 games for ROCs joining the skeleton crew at ROC Park.
Fantastic football conditions greeted the travelling PAOC side as ROCs kicked to the Morphett Vale end with first use of a 2 to 3 goal breeze. PAOC gained some ascendency in a fast-paced opening with ROCS defence doing well to repel the challenge. ROCs then increased their work rates to dominate play & booted 3 straight goals, rewarding the efforts our players strived to achieve. Working as a team with constant pressure & harassment to the PAOC side ROCS Academy set up a handy lead at the QTR time siren. Scores ROCs 4-2 vs PAOC 1-2.
PAOC were instantly back in the contest to start the 2nd QTR with a couple of quick clearance plays resulting in goals. Again, the ROCs dug deep to stop Prince's attacking forward entries & created some opportunities to goal as each team-controlled passages of play in an entertaining game. ROCs doing well enough to stay Infront on the scoreboard at the long break. Half Time scores ROCs 7-4 vs PAOC 5-6
Princes increased their presence around each contest and upset the ROCs plan to kick away with the breeze, a dour struggle developed with any score a bonus, ROCs again holding on to the lead at the siren. Three Q Time scores ROCs 8-5 vs PAOC 5-10.
The ROCs Academy were exhausted & with injury taking a toll on the squad it would have been easy to be run over by Prince's as the final stanza played out. PAOC dominated the opening 5-6 mins as ROCs continued to hold off any forward entries. Quick rotations to the ROCs on ball division allowed ROCs to take control of the game , booting 4 goals in this important time to set up an unbelievable (& unexpected) victory. Final score ROCs 12-5 def PAOC 7-12.
