Grand Final Report
ROCFC v Goodwood Saints
Grand Final Report
After what had seemed a long "short season", ROCS met Goodwood Saints in the 2020 decider. Played on the Norwood Oval, in far better weather conditions than initially expected, the ROCFC were eventually defeated by Goody Saints: 7.8 to 9.12.
Starting well with the breeze, we led at the first break by 13 points. However, a poor 10-15 minutes in the second quarter, when Goodwood scored 6.7 to 0.1, saw ROCS go into the main break trailing 3.3 to 7.8.
The players fought back hard, and with the weather worsening got within 4 points early in the last quarter. Despite fantastic support from the ROCS Army, the team couldn't quite get over the line.
To their credit, the players fought the game out to the end. Despite the bitter disappointment of the loss, Tom O'Malley would later say at the after game presentations :“I’d rather lose wearing a ROCS jumper than win wearing any other jumper”.
Best players included the determined and courageous Tommy O'Malley, cool-headed Anthony McCarthy, big-time player Craig Holm, experienced Nick Murphy, and the strong Dylan Reinbrecht and Stefan Lanzoni.
After a slow start to the season, the ROCFC has had to come from a long way back, and has subsequently been involved in sudden death contests for the past 6 weeks.
Club coach Will O'Malley has done a remarkable job as a playing coach. Willo has been greatly assisted by Nick Murphy, James Jordan (captain) and Dan McCallum (Vice-Capt).
The "Bench" has worked well as a group on Match Days - many thanks to Brendan Littler, Charlie O'Malley, John Corbett, Ben Moyle (runner) and Andrew Michelmore (Team Manager).
Physio Wahib Joubeir, Doctor Peter Hurley, Head-trainer Vicki Lines and her assistants, have all done a wonderful job.
Dean Lord and Bob Sutherland have again been enthusiastic volunteers, doing a range of tasks during the year with a minimum of fuss.
As always, website co-ordinator Matthew Haddad has provided all the relevant news and updates for the players and supporters.
