Rino's Rocs Reports R1-R2
Summary from the B's C's & D's R1-R2
Round 1 - Versus PAOC
Round 1 kicked off at the upgraded Campbelltown Memorial Oval with Steve 'Supercoach" Edwards and his D grade team. They recorded a well-deserved victory : 9.12 to 7.9. Whilst ROCS led at every break, they struggled to shrug off a determined PAOC.
The goal-kickers were led by the experienced Tyler Gava, Paul Norris and Matthew Zamparelli with 2 majors each. Better players included Tom Carpinelli, Tyler Gava, and debutants Cam Stamato, Michael "Irish" Brennan, Alex Pietrobon and Isaac Ivancic.
Congratulations to Paul "Chuck" Norris on being appointed D Grade Captain for 2019.
Unfortunately, in a game that could have gone either way, the C Grade were narrowly beaten by PAOC : 6.6 to 6.10. Coach Mark Twiggs would have been happy with the form shown by Jackson Sutcliffe, Nick Collins, Carlton Hollsten, Darren Leggett, Jake Bowler and Sam Moten. Lachlan Sutcliffe and Darren Leggett each kicked 2 goals. Well done to new Skipper Jarrod Varley, who has shown to be a great clubman in his time with the ROCS.
Stalwart Chris Ash played his 150th in the opening round. "Ashy" has been coach Damien Polkinghorne's most consistent performer in the past few seasons, but unfortunately the team could not get the win to celebrate the milestone game. ROCS were eventually defeated: 7.7 to 7.11. Tom McCormack (3 goals) was superb in his first outing for the club, and Jack Draper and Nich Scheid showed the value of having already played a season at this level. Chris Pahl, new player Anthony McCarthy and goal-sneak Adam Richter (2 goals) all had good games. The club welcomed back new B Grade Captain Ben Moyle after his lengthy stint interstate.
19 players donned the ROCS jumper for the first time in Round 1, and 144 had registered by the end of the second round.
Round 2
The ROCS D Grade travelled to Modbury for their 4.45pm clash against the Hawks, in the Club 18 competition. ROCS were way too strong, winning the encounter 17.7 to 0.8. Major goal-scorers were Oliver Bowler with 6 and Matthew Zamparelli with 5. Russell Brooks was best on ground in his first cameo since 2012. " Zampa" and "Ollie" Bowler were our next best, followed by Henry Dawson, Dan Gilbert and Max Lawrance (Best Team Man).
The C Grade bounced back from their Round 1 loss, to defeat Payneham/Norwood Union at home : 16.8 to 7.3. Lachlan Sutcliffe was a clear target at the goal-front, finishing with 7 majors, Isaac Ivancic kicked 4 and Sam "Go the Kangas" Moten 3. Justin McInerney was tireless in the ruck, and others to be high in the best player list included Sutcliffe, skipper "Jazz" Varley, Tim Lewis, Jarryd Ball (including mark of the year), Ivancic and Harry Carter. Alex Pietrobon and Nick Collins were also in great touch before being injured.
After being down by 6 goals at half time, and despite a late comeback, the B's were defeated by PNU : 8.4 to 10.6. Chris Pahl was our best. Connor Bristow showed his class. Jackson Sutcliffe was impressive, whilst Jack Draper, Tom McCormack (3 goals), and Adam Richter continued on the good form from the previous week.
Chris Pahl is due to play his 200th game in the next round. A former Club Captain and Club Champion, "Pahly" has been a great servant of the ROCFC.
