ROCS Quiz Show 2010 Report
Over 350 attended the annual ROC's Quiz Night
Quiz Night 2010
In this, the age of YouTube, facebook, skinny jeans and iPods, it’s great to see that an old fashioned quiz night is still going strong and can draw a great crowd.
In what would be close to record numbers for our club, over 350 people (or the average attendance for a Port Power home game) got along to the Purton Hall on a chilly July evening for the annual ROCs Quiz Night.
Regrettably the A grade slipped up against Pembroke but with both other teams winning and Drew Litster kicking his 1000th goal, there was still a good vibe on the night. In fact, the way drinks sales went, one would have thought it was the middle of summer with thirsty customers slamming Sam and Kieran at the bar from the get-go.
The night was an entertaining affair as always with six rounds of questions and plenty of games in between such as ‘knobs and knockers’ and the air guitar competition.
Mark Green was the star of this competition and destroyed a ukulele on his way to the title, Tommy ‘my name is’ Jonas entertained the ladies by getting his kit off and Thunder Pig Deegan, well we don’t really know what the pig was doing. Come to think of it, we never really know what the pig is doing…
The ‘coin toss’ competition continues to be popular with Charlie ‘Sticks’ O’Malley, Ben Moyle, Jessie Roberts and Luke ‘Squid’ Kelly just a few of the keen contributors. The Squid showed he is truly a seasoned tosser, winning a bottle of 12 year old Glenlivet. The way he was putting down frothies on the night, we’re actually surprised he didn’t neck it there and then.
Back to the quiz and, personally, I was delighted to be on the winning table and it just goes to show that recruiting a "Hot Seat" contestant to your table can pay dividends – or in this case, an Alma voucher and bucket of Coopers gear. Just on said Hot Seat contestant, watch the show this week to see my man, Old Iggies boy Chris Gregerson win some cold hard cash from Eddie McGuire. Chris actually told me on the night that although he won a lot of cash, he’d give it all back just to be a ROC.
Second and third place is to be advised with dishonourable mentions going to two tables who used their ‘joker’ twice in an attempt to take out the competition. Outrageous stuff!
Thanks go to our tremendous prize sponsors on the night which included Tom and friends from The Alma, Leanne Fraser and Coopers, Julien ‘Jules Bar' Ryan and McLaren Vale Beer Company, Schaps and Ivy League, Tony Cattrall and Cornes Toyota, Ten’s Brett Clappis and Darren Furst from Murphy Financial Services.
The committee also put in a lot of time to make this event successful, so thanks to them, to Stella Pedersen for cleaning up, to our bar staff on the night and to David and Karen Gilbert who came along Sunday morning and helped out.
Sincere thanks to John Wood, who as well as being a Gold Logie winner and damn fine actor, is also a gun quiz master. Thank you to John and wife Helen, who both put a great deal of work into running the show. We hope to coax you back next year, John!
Our biggest thanks go to Andrew Robertson, who continues to do so much work before, during and after this event and we simply could not do it without him. Thanks Robo and enjoy Darwin!
To wrap-up, there would be SANFL clubs that would battle to get 350 people along to a quiz night so special thanks must go to all the punters who continue to support this event in droves.
To those who suggested to me on the night that this was perhaps the biggest and best quiz night in world history, I think you may just have been right.
