Rd 14 vs Salisbury North (home)
For the third week in a row we were playing in game that had a lot riding on it. Pleasingly, we were again up for the challenge and we played some solid footy to come away with the win.
Our first quarter was excellent, the players looked sharp and we kicked some excellent goals to reward ourselves for our hard work. Nick Hombsch’s long goal from deep in the pocket and Tom Hurley’s snap shot were great goals kicked amongst a lot of congestion. In muddy, showery conditions we needed to manufacture goals like these to keep the score board ticking over. Defensively our first quarter was also very impressive, keeping Salisbury North to a solitary goal for the quarter.
Having a lead of over 4 goals at quarter time may have subconsciously caused the players to relax a little as our second quarter was not great. We wasted opportunities going inside 50 and our kicking at goal was deplorable. Defensively we also looked to relax as Salisbury North kicked 4.4 for the quarter, scoring virtually every time they went inside 50.
The last half was a real slog as the ground became boggy and the centre square a mud pit. I was really happy to see the players respond from our poor second quarter and play smarter, more hard working football. This allowed us to out score Salisbury North 6 goals to 2 in the second half and enjoy a 32 point victory.
With games to go this win means we remain in 5th spot with a 2 game buffer from Salisbury North in 6th spot. These 3 wins in a row have helped get our season back on track and in doing so we have given ourselves an opportunity to make something of the season. BUT, we are yet to win 4 games on the trot this season so that is our challenge this Saturday. I look forward to seeing a big crowd at Campbelltown Oval as we take on SHOCs in a triple header with the Jelly/Nelson Cup up for grabs.
