Coaches Report R5
Rd 5 Vs Port Districts at Campbelltown
There is no hiding from the fact we have had a number of players performing well below their best and our previous game against Goodwood was not pretty. We have also been guilty of allowing the opposition to score goals in quick burst. I have made it clear to the players that the only way to get back into form and winning games of footy is to acknowledge what we need to improve and then being prepared to do the hard work to improve in those areas.
Despite us being on top around the contests and winning more of the ball we just couldn’t seem to kick away from Port Districts for the majority of the match. The second quarter in particular we played some of our best footy and dominated around the contest, this allowed us to have the ball in our hands for most of the quarter. But frustratingly we let ourselves down not defending well enough when Port Districts did have the ball and this saw Port Districts hit the score board 6 times from only 7 inside 50 entries during that second quarter.
Mid way through the last quarter we led by only 3 points and Port Districts had all the momentum. However, for the next 15 minutes we played our most complete brand of footy for the season. By this I mean we competed hard for the contested ball, moved the ball the way we want to move it and we defended the way we want to defend. Despite having 3 key players coming off from heavy knocks and not being able to go back on during this 15 minute period we kicked 6.0 to Port Districts 0.0 to enjoy a 39 point win.
Now with 2 wins, 3 losses and 6th on the ladder this week’s game against Sals Nth (2 wins 3 losses and 5th) becomes another really important game for our season.
