Rd 1 Vs Uni at Campbelltown Oval

Our 2015 season didn’t get off to the ideal start, with Uni kicking the opening goal after 10 seconds of play. After that initial goal the first quarter became quite an even affair. I was happy with your tackling but I thought we could’ve been running harder defensively and used the ball more efficiently. Nathan Hornhardt - playing his first game for the club – was busy early and kicked our first goal from a long set shot.

The second quarter was much like the first, with both sides not adjusting to the wet slippery conditions too well. We went into the half time break with a 3 point lead.

Despite Uni hitting the lead early in the 3rd with another fast goal at the start of a quarter we quickly started to play some excellent, no nonsense wet weather football. Our midfield started to get on top and we certainly won more contested ground balls, surging the ball forward at all costs. Our defensive running also improved from the first two quarters. In our best quarter for the day we kicked 5.2 to 1.5 to have a 24 point lead at the last break.

Despite both sides going inside 50 ten times each in the last quarter we kicked 5.4 to Uni’s 2.1 to run out winners by 45 points.

It was good to see 3 players play their first games for the club; Nathan Hornhardt, Callum Cook and Matt Stelzer.

Unfortunately John Corbett had a tooth knocked out and some other teeth damaged in a big collision in the last quarter. Following a phone call from Oliver Wilkie (played in the B’s) it was great to hear that Ollie’s dad Dr Richard Wilkie was able to make arrangements so that Corbs could be seen by a dentist immediately to have his teeth repaired and a couple stitches put into his bottom lip. Although it sounds like Corbs will be out for a few games he was really appreciative of both Ollie and Dr Wilkie for helping him out.
