Rd 16 Vs Portland (away)
Despite playing on Portland’s small ground this was quite a free flowing game, with 38 goals kicked for the match. Although the final margin of 89 points indicates a one sided affair, it wasn’t until mid through the second quarter that we were able to kick away. In fact Portland was only one goal behind at the 15 minute mark of the second quarter. The last 10 minutes of that quarter we played some outstanding football to not only stop Portland kicking another goal but also kicking 5 goals of our own. The half time scores were ROCs 12.5 to Portland 5.5.
The third quarter, kicking with a slight breeze we were able to extend our lead even further, despite 3 ROCs players coming off with minor knocks and one ROCs player hobbling around in the forward line. We kicked 8.6 to 2.0 in this quarter, which meant we went into the last break with a comfortable 84 point lead.
The last quarter saw our pressure drop off and that allowed Portland to move the ball with better efficiency and hit the score board often enough to kick 5.3 to our 6.2 for the quarter.
For the majority of the game our run from the back line and through the midfield enabled us to move the ball quickly into attack, which allowed our forwards time and space when the ball was kicked to them. Heath Commane was by far the most dangerous forward on the ground, finishing with a bag of 10 goals.
I was really happy with our centre clearance work and the way our back 6 provided run and rebound.
The big win was the perfect prelude to our 40 year anniversary ball that over 400 past and present ROCs players and supporters attended that night. I’d like to say a big thank you and congratulations to President David Gilbert for organising such a big and successful event for the club. It was a fantastic night that brought together so many great people to celebrate our fantastic club’s proud history, what a night it was!
Next week we head back to Campbelltown Oval to play Port Districts.
