Rd 15 Vs Henley at Henley

With Henley sitting 3rd and having played Tea Tree Gully (win) and Goodwood (loss) in our last two matches this was our third match in a row against a top four side.

The game started as you’d expect with tough, contested football played by both sides which saw a very close battle during the first quarter. We took a narrow 2 point lead into the first break.

During the second quarter our midfield started to get on top, which allowed us to win more of the ball. But frustratingly we weren’t able to reward ourselves for the amount of ball we had. Too often our skill execution going inside 50 was poor or we fumbled the ball at critical times. Despite this we still took at 3 point lead into the half time break.

The tight contest continued in the 3rd quarter. Despite both sides scoring 3.2 during the 3rd quarter, when Henley kicked a couple of skilful goals late in the quarter they certainly looked to have the momentum. It was good to see our players defend strongly during this period, which ensured we maintained our 3 point lead at the last break.

The last quarter was easily our best quarter for the day. Our midfield run and ball movement improved as the quarter went on and our defence stood up to only concede 1 point for the quarter. Although we were wasteful in front of goal, kicking 3.6 for the quarter, the 25 win was a good reward for the effort the players put in.

With three games to go this win means we are now guaranteed of not losing second spot on the ladder.

Next week we play the 5th placed Portland away.
