ROCS vs Goodwood at Goodwood
Saturday wasn’t the best day for our football club this season, comprehensively losing all 3 grades.
Goodwood continually won the ball in close and drove it forward, putting our defence under constant attack. Despite the early onslaught of ball going inside Goodwood’s forward 50 our backline stood up quite well and defended gallantly. But we were struggling to penetrate our forward 50 and Goodwood were able to too easily run the ball out of our forward line. A running goal kicked by Kieran Holland late in the first quarter actually made the score board look better than the contest actually was. Quarter time scores: ROCS 1.1 to Goodwood 3.1.
The middle two quarters was when Goodwood punished us on the score board. Our poor skill errors, poor defending and inability to get our hands on the ball allowed Goodwood to kick 6.7 during these two quarters, while we were only able to register 4 points.
During the last quarter we were able to win more of the ball in the midfield and importantly use it a lot better kicking inside our 50m. Anthony Medhurst was lively this quarter and provided a good target up forward.
Outscoring Goodwood by a goal during this last quarter the final scores were: ROCS 4.7 (31) lost to Goodwood 11.9 (75).
It was great to see James Butterworth and Josh Moyle play their first A grade games for the ROCS. This season we have now had 8 different players play their first A grade game for the club.
“Butters” is in his second year at the club having played soccer at the College from year 10, before playing 3 seasons for the Rostrevor Old Collegians Soccer Club. Despite some bad luck last season, breaking a bone in his foot during preseason and then later breaking a finger he has adapted to football quite well, with his height and athleticism clear assets. I look forward to seeing Butters continue to improve as a footballer as I’m confident he has the potential to play a lot of A grade football for us in the years to come.
Josh Moyle is current player Damien and past player Ben’s younger brother. This was only Josh’s 5th match for the season (4 games in the B’s). Now he’s getting some continuity with playing and training I am sure he will continue to improve his match day output as he clearly has a lot of ability for someone so young.
With all of Div 1 having the bye this week we look forward to playing the 3rd placed Henley on Sat the 2nd of August.
This Sat (July 26) the C grade have a stand-alone game at Campbelltown Oval at 2.15pm against Adelaide Uni.
