Round 10 V Gaza (away)

Despite Gaza only having one win so far, we were well aware that they have enough quality players to win more games in the second half of the season and recent results suggest they have improved since we played them in round 1. With this in mind I was pleased the way we started the game. Our midfield was on top, winning plenty of the ball, which allowed us to put Gaza’s defenders under pressure. Unfortunately we were wasteful in front of goal in the first quarter and Gaza weren’t. So despite our early dominance we weren’t able to put scoreboard pressure on them. Quarter time scores: ROCS 4.7 to Gaza 3.1.

In the second quarter Gaza got on top at stoppages and started to win more of the ball through the midfield. Our accountability really dropped off and with their ball use being superior to ours the momentum swung in Gaza’s favour. This resulted in Gaza kicking 4.2 to our 2.0 for the quarter which saw us go into half time down by 2 points.

The third quarter was a great contest and although we only kicked 3.2 for the quarter I was pleased that our intensity and work rate had lifted from the second quarter. Three quarter time scores were ROCS 9.9 to Gaza 9.4.

Kicking into the slight breeze and up the hill, the last quarter was our best for the day. Our half back line attacked the ball strongly, providing valuable run as well as being strong defensively. Our midfield controlled the stoppages and the composure they showed with their possessions was much improved from the first three quarters.

It was great to see Chris Pahl (vice-captain) take three bounces and kick a goal late in the quarter to seal the match for us. Pahly was playing his first A grade game since he had a knee reconstruction just over 10 months ago.

Final scores were: ROCS 13.12 to Gaza 10.5.

Next week we play Salisbury North and The Quarry. With the marquee being up on the hill for our past players, sponsors and 2004 C grade premiership reunion, it promises to be a great day at the footy.
