Round 6 V Uni at Uni
Following last week’s poor performance you always hope that the players will respond in a way that shows last week’s result really hurt them. I can’t say the first half that is was the case. But to outscore Uni 8.9 to 2.3 in the second half, with only 19 fit players was really pleasing to see.
The first quarter was played with a lot of run and free flowing football from both sides. This resulted in the forwards of both sides seeing a lot of the football and both defences under pressure. Mind you, I thought we made far too many uncharacteristic errors with the ball in our hands, which Uni often capitalised on. The quarter time scores were ROCS 5.4 to Uni 4.4.
The second quarter was played at a similar tempo and an even contest continued. I felt we were letting ourselves down by not doing a lot of the basics well and consequently the longer the quarter went the more Uni gained momentum. Our forwards were playing well and competing hard but as has been the case recently they again were inaccurate in front of goals. With Uni kicking a goal with seconds to go in the quarter we trailed them by 3 points at the main break. Half time scores were ROCS 8.9 to Uni 9.6.
We had a lot of players down (performance wise) in the first half and being down to 19 fit men from half time the hard work was certainly in front of us. So with this in mind I was really pleased to see many of the players improve their output in the second half. Dan McCallum, Craig Holm, Jack Nelligan and Brendan Littler all started to win more balls inside the contest and our key defenders got on top of their opponents. This resulted in the momentum swinging in our favour and we went into the last quarter with the lead. ¾ time scores were ROCS 12.11 to Uni 10.9.
In the last quarter our midfield run was excellent and our forwards continued to hit the scoreboard virtually every time the ball went inside our forward 50, resulting in us kicking 4.7 for the quarter. The defenders pleasingly continued their much improved second half and our team defence was also much improved, which meant we only conceding 1.0 for the quarter, coming away with a 39 point victory.
Final scores ROCS 16.18 to Uni 11.9.
This week we host an inform Henley side at Campbelltown Oval. It will also be Meds’ 200th game in the Red and Black, which just happens to coincide with ladies day.........
See you all at The Quarry for what promises to be a great day at the Footy!
