A Grade vs SPOC R3
It is often said that good sides don't lose two matches in a row. So for the players respond they way they did on Saturday after the loss against Salisbury North in Rd 2 was certainly pleasing.
Despite the margin at the end of the game, it wasn't until the last quarter that we actually took control of the game and managed to kick away from SPOC. The first quarter SPOC were dominating the stoppages and despite them kicking into a strong breeze they certainly looked more dangerous than us. But to the players credit they didn't panic or deviate from the way we wanted to play. The pressure on the opposition and tackling by the ROCS players for the next 3 quarters - led by Jimmy Jordan - were outstanding and played a huge role in allowing us to gain the ascendency and come away with a 55 point win.
The back six played well as a group with Kieran Holland and Ryan Holm having stand out games individually. Craig Holm was everywhere in the first half and along with Matt Dawes, Dan McCallum, Scott Gilbert and John Corbett provided great run and drive through the midfield. Drew Litster capped off a good game with 5 goals and Luke Manuel kept the ROCS' faithful entertained with 4 last quarter goals.
With this weeks opponent (Uni) also sitting on 2 wins and 1 loss it shapes as a big match for our season. I look forward to seeing a big crowd at Campbelltown supporting the Red and Black.

B Grade vs SPOC R3
For the 3rd week in a row, the ROCS B Grade recorded a strong victory! After starting poorly the previous 2 weeks, the boys dominated the 1st quarter kicking with a strong breeze. Unfortunately we were a little wasteful in front of goals and kicked 2-9 for the term. Many of our shots on goal were from difficult angles, partly due to our poor forward line entries but also as a result of SPOC playing 1 – 2 players behind the ball. Not wanting to play a similar defensive style to the opposition, the ROCS attacked SPOC into the breeze in the 2nd quarter. We used the attacking side of the ground effectively and scored 2 important goals to give us a 5 goal lead at half time. The 2nd half saw us play some brilliant team football to eventually breakaway from SPOC and record a 75 point! One of the most pleasing aspects of the team at the moment is their ability to apply constant pressure to the opposition. One of our goals is to be a ‘difficult team to play’ and while this is a subjective goal, I certainly think we are currently achieving it.
Selecting best players was again difficult (which is a good thing!) however a special mention must go to Nic Janetski, who after playing the first 2 games in the C Grade certainly showed his class and ability to win the contested footy. After a slow start to the season, Jeremy O’Leary had an outstanding game on his wing. He used his pace and ability to run and carry to provide many inside 50’s entries. Charlie Jordan is showing himself to be an important player, with his 3rd quarter efforts on-ball being a big influence in us running away with the game. Whilst Chris Ash and Pat Holland also continued their fantastic starts to the year.
This week we come up against Adelaide Uni, who are also undefeated so far this year. With it also being the annual ‘ROCS ladies day’, the game should be a ripper!!

C Grade Report - R4
Rocs C Grade squad were on the road this week, travelling to SPOC College to play alongside the Rocs Bs /A’s as part of a triple header against last season’s Premier Club. Conditions were very blustery & windy as the opposing teams lined up, making correct ball use a high priority during the afternoons challenge. Celebrating a milestone this week was 50 gamer ‘Thirsty Camel’ Elliott Shirley, a great club & team man at the Rocs footy club. The Camel has always set a fine example during his career to date, as he has hardly missed a training session or game since he debuted and possesses leadership qualities on the field for teammates to look up to. Kicking straight into the blustery & fierce breeze was the early challenge for our young squad, who were immediately into attack but found scoring very difficult as the SPOC side were prepared to run & take on our running brigade and really challenge our boys, with the SPOC defence never giving an inch of turf for Rocs forwards to work into. Even though Rocs had more time in possession over the qtr. SPOC applied themselves to push the Red & Blacks till the siren, with both teams scoring 2-1 (13). Once again our ever reliable back six players led by Thirsty Camel at CHB & Willo (Sam) Wilson at fullback held SPOCs charge forward with the aid of the strong breeze. The two key defenders were assisted by young guns Jack McSpozza (McCarron) and 2nd gamer Brad (Hollo) Hollis both players using poise & correct decision making, linking up with Cpt. Blood Emanuele & Chuck (Paul) Norris to send the Rocs into attack. By the halftime break The Rocs side had failed to capitalise on the hard working from our onballers & wingmen’s best efforts to play attacking fluent footy. Kicking a wayward 4-7 to SPOCs 1 goal to lead 6-8 (44) vs SPOC 3-1(19).
During the 3rd qtr. as SPOC still harassed the Rocs in most positions both teams still had trouble scoring Rocs adding 1-4 with SPOC inaccurate despite their best efforts kicking 1-7. With both sides clearly frustrated as they gave their best around the park only to fail on the scoreboard the 3/4qtr siren sounded to great relief & a chance to regroup & focus on our strategies in the final stanza. Rocs lead by 22pts at 3/4qtr time, a tentative advantage in a low scoring, mistake riddled outing that had transpired so far.
The Red & Blacks were urged to fire-up ,get serious and take the game by the scruff of the neck & play the hard running free flowing game that we have developed over the last 3 seasons. And Fair dinkum the boys exploded from the restart to pile on 3 goals in the first 4 mins, leaving SPOC & supporters stunned. Then after SPOC reacted with a lone forward entry, cut off by our miserly halfback line, the Rocs Juggernaut kicked into overdrive as Rocs took total control in all positions spurred on by a white hot on-ball brigade. Led by Linchpin (Sam) Lynch in the ruck directing the Sherrin to Bunji (Andy) Oconner, Jordy Shore (Jordan Owen) or the totally dominant Hulk (Mat) Snorkel Zamperelli who did as he pleased to inspire the now rampant Rocs as they slammed home 11-3 to 0-0 to blitz away winning by 91 pts.
Final scores Rocs 18-15(123) def. SPOC 4-8(32).
Players to influence the game over 4 qtrs - Golden ox (Craig Fabbian) yet another complete effort from our 'Born again' CHF, the former dour defender, coaxed out of retirement has worked tirelessly across half forward to give his team a focal point this season. The consummate professional always gives 110% when on the field of battle & has been steadily adding to his career goal tally each week, this week’s gem in the last qtr. from the boundary in full flight had the look of a young D. Jarman about it !!!
Great return from long-term injury by C Grade & Rocs cult hero Bang Bang Bartold who gave his team another option out of the goal square. The big fella has lost none of his antics during his recovery from knee surgery. Banger marked anything in his airspace, booted 3-3 and kneed or shinned a couple of others toward goal, even gave his trademark goal celebration -six shooters firing - after slotting a couple of majors. Dilshan (Pipes) Leggett also in his first game this season went in hard at the ball & opponent ruffling a few feathers on his way at half forward. Pidgeon (Conner) Deegan & McGlovern (Josh) Weaver kept on their impressive form at senior level both rewarded by booting 3 goals when up forward. 2 other impressive players who have taken all before them, Baby faced Jack Tagg a silky smooth moving traffic & Jordy Shore (Jordan Owen) yet another quietly spoken youngster very impressive as a 'tall' rover creating possessions when on the ball.
