B Grade - Elimination Final vs Broadview
Rocs B grade persevered all day and overcome a slow and nervous start to record a 8 point win in the elimination final on the weekend. Broadview started well and kicked 5 goals to 0 in the first quarter, using a reasonably strong breeze.
When we got a hold of the breeze in the second quarter , we used the ball a little better, however didn't take all our opportunities in front of goal kicking 3 goal 4 behinds. This left us 9 points down at half time. It was important that we didn't let Broadview capitalize on the breeze in the 3rd quarter and in a great defensive effort we broke even scoring one goal each and being within 6 points at the last change, coming home with the breeze.
The quarter didn't start off how we would have liked with Broadview kicking 3 of the first 4 goals and at the 12 minute mark of the final term Broadview held a 19 point lead. To the lads credit they kept chipping away and trying to out run Broadview and eventually we were able to get away and gather all the momentum. We kicked the final 4 goals of the quarter and hit the front for the first time in the match with 3 minutes to go and recorded a hard fought 8 point win.
Henry Schilling was awarded best player for the game. He played well across half back and then gave us some extra grunt on the ball in the final quarter. Henry always plays head down and burrows in to win the hard ball and moves the ball forward consistently. Sam Tagg continued his good form and was important with his forward pressure and tackling. Sam uses the ball really well and showed a lot of composure when the team was under pressure during the early part of the game. Jordan Lyons was given 3rd best. While he wasn't a stand out in the first 3 quarters, When he moved into the middle in the final term, his hardness and fierce attack on the ball, won the game for us. His attack on the ball and body inspired his teammates and his 15 minutes of footy turned the game. We would not have won without his leadership. Patrick Holland was 4th best with his defensive role in the backline. 5th best was Elliott Shirley for winning his position at centre half back and long clearing kicks from defence. Reece Digance was 6th best. Reece has been a bit of a Mr Fix it lately. He was a great focus in the forward line, attacking the ball and body hard, and did a good job when moved into defence.
Special mentions need to go to ruckmen Patrick Murphy and Charlie O'Malley for their efforts in wrestling back the dominance in the centre and winning the position around the ground with the kick behind the play.
It was a special win and the lads really enjoyed the win. We now turn our focus towards SPOC this coming Saturday and we have nothing to lose. We are yet to beat them this year, but we have matched them for long periods of the match. Our persistence may pay off again if we are within striking distance in the last term.
