A Grade Report
Round 12 V SHOCs at Campbelltown 7/7/2012
Another successful week for the ROCS with convincing wins across all three grades meaning that September action for all grades is looming as a distinct possibility. The A Grade got off to a flyer in the first quarter with 250 gamer Drew Litster on the end of some good direct football kicking 5 goals in the first quarter alone. The willingness of the midfield to bustle the ball forward at all costs caught out the Sacred Heart defenders numerous times and the writing was on the wall for a comprehensive victory. After SHOC beat SPOC last week it was important to get off to a good start to quash any momentum they may have brought into this game.
The second quarter became a bottle neck with numerous ball ups and the ROCS not able to find the space and free flowing football produced in the first quarter. James Jordan was finding plenty of the ball and was supported through the midfield by consistent performers, in Will O’Malley in his 50th game and Craig Holm. Trent Versace playing his first game for a long time came on for his first run and played well down back while Paul Fantasia worked very hard across half forward to provide a real focal point.
With a significant lead at half time the aim was to come out and put the game beyond doubt early in the third quarter. The first 10 minutes was a frenetic pace with numerous forward 50 entries and three goals to achieve exactly that. We had many winners all over the ground with Scott Gilbert taking further steps to getting back to peak form, Damien Moyle was strong on his wing and Tom Birch and Steve McKenna busy in the forward line. John Corbett went down with what looked to be a bad injury however it appears to be more of an impingement on his ankle
The last quarter wasn’t the prettiest football Campbelltown has seen as SHOCs seemed content to bottle the game up with lots of ball ups in a repeat of the second quarter. Given the game was beyond doubt the only real spectacle with the probably the Golden Retriever coming off the bench for his second run for the game and first touch on the outer wing. The ROCS have a big opportunity in the next two weeks to cement our spot in finals and have moved into third position on the ladder with Salisbury North dropping another game to Goodwood. Congratulations again to Drew Litster on his 250th and Vice Captain Will O’Malley on his 50th. Most importantly both played very good games to help remember the occasion.

Well done to the B grade on another good win after another week of many changes. It’s pleasing to see some guys continuing to press for selection and keep the A grade players on their toes. Congratulations also to the C grade who thrashed Walkerville who they lost to earlier in the year.

On a sadder note, Colin Boots (father of past players Simon - 162 games and Damian Boots - 185 games) and long time sponsor and supporter passed away on Friday 6th July 2012.
The Club extends its condolences to Mrs Boots (Loretta) and their children: Damian, Simon and Katrina and to his extended family and many friends.

B Grade Report - R12
The B grade were able to grind out a really good 26 point win against Sacred Heart on the weekend. Rocs kicked against a reasonably strong breeze in the first quarter and kicked the first 2 goals (both to Luke Sheridan) of the game to get off to a good start, before Sacred Heart settled and kicked the next couple to take a 2 point advantage into the first break. We knew that Sacred Heart would come out with a real intensity and our challenge was to meet that intensity and step it up a bit more. Nick McDonough lead the way with his attack on the ball from half back and was clearly our best player in the first half. Tom Taylor was also very effective in the centre helping us get a couple of handy centre breaks. Around the ground we were getting beaten around contests and Sacred Hearts pressure had ROcs players fumbling below their knees when trying to take possession. The second quarter was closely fought and we were able to kick 4 goals to 3 to have a 3 point lead at half time. Patrick Holland was working well in ruck. Simon Fitsgerald lead well at full forward and kicked 2 important goals. We still struggled around the contests as Sacred Heart had set up well and were getting good clearance from behind the contest. Once we woke up to that in the second half , we were able to control the game much better.
Our second half was very good. We kicked 5 goals and restricted Sacred Heart to just 1 goal in the 3rd quarter and kept them goalless in the final quarter. Dale Sheedy got better as the game progressed and was very influential in the final quarter kicking 2 goals.
Our backline was pretty good all day and got better as the game went on. Sam Wilson played at full back and centre half back later in the game was awarded best player for the day. For a 18 year old, he reads the ball really well and has a good sized body to create a solid contest. His real strength is the way he reads the play and takes some very good contested grabs. Tom Taylor was second best and Tommy just racks up possessions week after week and is very important to our side. His use of hands in close is a good weapon and his hardness at the ball inspires teammates. Third best, Patrick Holland has risen to the challenge, becoming the lead ruck man and works tirelessly around the ground. His slight frame and medium height suggests that he shouldn't be an effective ruckman, but his leap and heart has had him in the best players over the past month.
The B grade used 3 lads from the Rostrevor college first 18's while the holidays are on. Charles Jordan, Nick Holland and Tom O'Malley (all good Rocs families) all played well and deserve their spots in the side providing plenty of run and enthusiasm. Tom O'Malley was awarded 4th best from his position across half back. He certainly showed no fear and attack the ball with intensity and pressured the opposition into mistakes. He showed good hands and his skills improved as the game wore on. Fifth best was Ryan Castellano, who is getting some match fitness under his belt now and his playing well more consistently for more of the game. Ryan will be important in the midfield when the finals arrive.
The B grade have now won 5 in a row and we need to keep winning to cement a place in the finals. This week is an important match against Gepps Cross and it is not a match we can afford to drop.
