ROCS A's, B's & C's - Three Wins - Coaches Report R4

Coaches Report R4

A Grade Report

A welcome win set up by a strong first quarter. Although we were challenged a number of times we held our nerve and were always able to kick the steadying goal we needed. It was an excellent result given we made five changes and have a number of first choice players with long term injuries.

Now the challenge is to build on this result.

Best players were Anthony Medhurst, Craig Holm, Scott Gilbert, Peter Baccanello, Drew Litster (who kicked 6 goals) Will O'Malley and Ryan Holm in a much better total team performance.

B Grade Report

Many of the current group of ROC players had some association with Athelstone through playing junior football there, including myself. They are a strong club and certainly attract ex Rostrevor College students because of the stronghold in the area through their junior structure. Hence, it was terrific for our guys to play for local pride in the local derby and play against guys that they played junior footy with and went to school with. Overall the intensity and tightness of the match proved a highlight. There was nothing in the game all day and despite us having some chances to put more of a gap on the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter, to Athelstone's credit they were ready for the contest. The last quarter provided many highlights, more so for the fact that Athelstone got to within 1 goal on a couple of occasions and we managed to take the ball into our forward line and terrific goals to rookies Russell Brooks and Damien Moyle were able to steady us and see us over the line in a terrific contest and win a game that perhaps in the past we may have lost.

Highlights of the day, were mark of the year by Daniel Buberis in his first game for the club for some years. In the third quarter Sam Bowler took on a couple of opponents, left them in his wake for pace, had 3 bounces and kicked truly from 35metres.

An important win to keep us in the hunt at 2-2, whilst we are competing well, our skill level needs to improve dramatically if we are to consistently perform at the level we would like.

C Grade Report

The C grade made the long trek down Grand Junction Rd to play Wingfield at Wingfield and came away with a solid 28 point win. In an often scrappy game the C's played well in bursts but dropped off their intensity in patches and disappointingly were out scored in the last quarter.

It was encouraging to see the team occasionally play cohesive, team focused football and some passages of play showed what the team was capable of. The most pleasing aspect of the victory were some solid individual efforts.

Pat Murphy's ruck work and tireless efforts around the ground were a highlight, Luke Kelly continued his sound form at Centre HAlf Back, Brad Green rebounded well across half back and played well as a creative half forward, Bails efforts in the centre were solid, Brendon Edson presented and contested well at Centre Half Forward and Darren Leggett worked hard all day.

In summary, it was a valuable win for the C's with some positive signs but there is room for improvement ahead of next week's game against Pembroke OS.
