Round 8 V Gepps Cross at Campbeltown 2/6/2012
This week was a successful one for us having wins in all three grades for the first time in some while. The A’s got off to a flier peppering the goals for the first 20 minutes with Gepps Cross seemingly having no answer for our class in the midfield and multiple players dangerous in the forward 50. This was to be our most productive quarter on the scoreboard kicking half of our goals for the game.
Kicking into a slight breeze in the second quarter it was important to get a good start and we did getting the first goal very quickly. Luke Manuel seemed to find as much space as he liked across the half forward line and our State under 23 midfield representatives in Will O’Malley, Craig Holm and Jack Nelligan were sharing the ball around at will. Eventually Gepps Cross managed to slow the momentum and for the last half of the second quarter they spent significant time in the forward 50 without being too damaging on the scoreboard. Brad Manuel was playing a very disciplined role at full back and held down seasoned goal kicker Daniel Hargraves very well.
The third quarter was in some ways very similar to the first with ROCS winning most of the restarts and dominating general play with the ball spending majority of the quarter in our forward half. Finishing off in front of goals was very disappointing kicking 2 goals 8 behinds for the quarter and many of those being gettable goals. From here in the game became quite ugly and unispiring.
The last quarter was characterized by multiple turnovers from both sides, a report and red card for one of their players, and head injuries to Charlie O’Malley and another one of their players. Chris Pahl stood up very well in defence and John Corbett had plenty of the ball also. Luke Manuel and Tom Birch were shining lights up forward and Mick Aliosi found himself in lots of space on a occasions late in the game as it opened up.
The B grade had an up and down day but ground out a hard fought win and must be very relieved to be back in the winners circle. Well done to the C grade on a huge win over Ovingham.
