A Grade Report - R3
ROCFC vs SHOC (Jelly Nelson Cup) @ Sacred Heart 29/4/2012

Round 3 V SHOCs The ROCS got off to a very good start for the third week in a row but just like last week failed to hurt the opposition where it matters on the scoreboard.  At quarter time we had 9 scoring shots to 3 but only led by one point.  After controlling the first 20 minutes with numerous forward 50 entries we let them back in the game with a couple of lapses in concentration and some silly free kicks.  This proved a telling factor the week before against Salisbury North and was disappointing to see it occur again.

In the second quarter we were actually beaten to the ball.  Some of their quality onballers took control of the game and with some fast entry into their 50 they had 10 shots on goal out of only their 20 for the game.  At half time our backs were against the wall being down by 7 points and it would have been easy to just roll over.

To the teams credit we dominated possession in the premiership quarter but once again we failed to put it on the scoreboard kicking 5 goals 8 for the quarter and missing some easy ones.  Some of the guys had big quarters when the game was on the line including Scott Gilbert, Tom Birch and John Corbett.  The last quarter was similar to the first and second, with our intensity setting the standard for majority of the time.   They seemed to goal most times they went deep into attack whereas we kicked 3 points from set shots and kicked the only goal for the quarter after the siren.

There were many good contributors this week compared to last week.  As mentioned after round 2 having a more even spread of contributors goes along way to winning games and this proved the case on Sunday.

Best players were Tom Birch for his second Best on Ground for the year, Luke Manuel who very dangerous all day and could have kicked at least 5. Jack Nelligan continued his good form winning the medal for BOG on the day as chosen by the opposition coaches, Scott Gilbert had his best game for the year and has become a very consistent performer.  Craig Holm was very consistent across four quarters and Chris Pahl did a good job in controlling their best onballer.

Well done to the B’s on a very convincing win.  As stated last week, this game was going to test our depth and we came through with flying colours.  Bad luck to the C grade on their loss to Walkerville no doubt they’ll be keen to bounce back.  On injury news the worst possible result from last weeks injury to Tom Wigley was confirmed as a season/ career ending ruptured Achilles tendon.  Well done to Wigs on a fine career cut far too short with some extremely bad luck in recent years.  We look forward to his ongoing contribution from the bench.

Best Players: Tom Birch, Luke Manuel, Jack Nelligan, Scott Gilbert, Craig Holm, Chris Pahl

Goal Kickers: Luke Manuel 3, Drew Litster 2, Tom Birch 2, James Jordan, Damien Moyle, Paul Fantasia, Scott Gilbert, John Corbett.

B Grade Report - R3

The B grade recorded its 3rd straight win over Sacred Heart on Sunday. The B grade played its best game for the year and a solid 4 quarter effort saw the Rocs win by a convincing 11 goals.

Sacred heart opened the scoring within the first 30 seconds winning the tap and clearance from the centre, but only to register a behind. We played a more conventional style of game, and didn't do a 18 man flood and by keeping a couple of forwards in our forward line Patrick Murphy was able to kick the first goal by moving the ball through the centre quickly and catching the Sacred Heart backline out. Dale Sheedy continued his good form from last week and marked and goaled to take a 6 point lead into quarter time. Tom Taylor was influential with his tackling and quick hands to running players in the first term. Chris Cialini used his body well to break through some tackles. Sam Bridge gave us a great target across centre half forward and took some strong grabs. Tom Bowler and Dan Gilbert provided plenty of run and options around the middle of the ground and 'old man' Bazzica was fantastic off the half back line, running in straight lines and picking off the loose ball.

The second quarter saw us extend the lead by kicking 4 goals to 2 to take a handy 17 point lead into half time. Dale Sheedy kicked another 2 in the second term, Luke Sheridan (playing his first game for the year) kicked one and showed plenty of toughness around the ball when he came on in the second term. Murph kicked an important goal late by using his strength to gather the ball, turn around and kick the goal with a defender hanging off him. In the second term our back six of Shadiac, Versace Bazzica, Norris, Holland and McDonough were very good and repelled a lot of attacks and made Sacred Heart work for every possession in the forward line.

The third term was the best footy I've seen the b grade play in my short time in coaching. We piled on 7 goals to 1 and had a match winning 54 point lead at 3 quarter time. Sheedy kicked 2 more and missed a couple of easy shots as well. Reece Digance played his best game for the year and made his presence felt in the forward line, kicking 3 second half goals. Reece's intensity at the ball and body was mirrored by the entire side and our pressure on the opposition was relentless all day. Charlie O'Malley continued his good form in the ruck and around the ground kicked one and Stevie McKenna showed his superior fitness level by getting well on top and kicking 2 goals from his wing in the third term.  Sam Bridge went into the ruck at the start of the third term and dominated taps, giving our on-ballers first use. Henry Schilling in particular was fantastic in reading the ball from the taps and set up 2 successive goals from centre ball ups delivering perfect kicks to our leading forwards.

The last quarter was good to see the team not relax and denied Sacred Heart any goals in the last quarter. We kicked 2 goals in a hard last quarter and registered a very good win. Eliott Shirley played better as the day went on in a variety of positions and showed his versatility around the ground. Jordan Lyons was relieved to get through his first game in over 12 months after recovering from a knee reconstruction and he looks like he can help out on the ball with a good hard attack.  Jezz had plenty of kicks and uses his pace to burn his opponents off and was handy on the ball.

Best players today was very hard to give as 21 players did their job perfectly. Special mentions to Bridgy, Bazz and Gilbo who were very unlucky not to squeeze into the club awards. And our back 6 did an excellent job allowing only 4 goals through for the day. Henry Schilling was best on ground this week. His toughness in the contests and ability to break tackles and get the ball forward quickly was really important to us. Tom Taylor was second best and is getting some fitness after a minimal pre-season. His hands in close and traffic is excellent and he just keeps going all day. Tom Bowler showed class and composure and his use of the ball was excellent, earning him third best player. Dale Sheedy kicked 5.5 and should have had at least 7 or 8, but his hard leading and good hands gives his team mates confidence to go to him in the forward lines. And 5th best was Charlie O'Malley as his ruck work is  improving all the time. The young man is competitive and enthusiastic and reads the play very well around the ground.

This week coming is a massive test against Goodwood Saints. They have towelled up some of their opponents and we will need to bring the same type of game next week to be competitive.

C Grade Report - R3

A sensational day for Aussie rules greeted the Rocs & Walkerville footy clubs last Saturday. That was all that was fine & dandy as the first three quaters of the game saw the Rocs C squad totally outplayed by a far more committed & team orientated football team. From the first bounce and subsequent forward entry that was quickly revoked that was that as far as the Rocs boys would be on the attack & in front of their opponents. To their credit the Walkerville footy club ran in numbers, ran to space, ran in numbers to provide support, kicked to position, tackled & smothered to work as a team & totally blanket the Rocs best endeavors in a way that was mostly a little embarrassing from our side of the game.

Totally outclassed until late in the third quarter when the game turned into a dour struggle with the Rocs boys finally doing the hard yards to pick up the loose players and making some sort of effort to nullify the Walkerville barrage into attack. Only Walkerville's inaccuracy in front of goals had the Rocs even remotely in the contest & to our credit the Rocs won the last quarter to finish "only" 20 odd points behind at the final bell.

With the old cliché's ringing in our ears "the loss we had to have" & "a wake up call" our boys must regroup & find the passion for the contest in the next few weeks or risk stumbling down the ladder towards mediocrity or demotion.  Although outclassed and beaten  the Rocs still had plenty of players who never gave in and gave their best - youngsters Sticks Kernahan impressed with his attack at the contest, Sammy "motor" Moten controlling fullback, Sam "tagga" Tagg & Josh "coalminer" Daniele around the ball & Dan Marotti cool in defense. Evergreen Paul "trojan warrior" Bannister & Mr. Fabulous Craig Fabian did their usual best in defense or attack while top class ruckman Alex"big Mac" McKenzie gave Dan"bale of hay" Baillie & Jess Abfalter plenty of opportunities to use the ball. Great return by Dillon "legga mutton" Leggett after a 7 month stint on the recovery trail, that legga mutton went in hard & strong all-day & used his pace & skills to effect.

Final scores Walkerville 10-18(78) def Rocs 8-5(53)
Goal kickers- C.Fabian-3, J.Abfalter-2,A.O'Conner-1,H.Kernahan-1,A.McKenzie-1

#Saturday did produce a fine sporting achievement rivaling Australia 2 winning the America's Cup boat race or Makybe Divas' 3 in a row Melbourne cups.
After countless years of honing the skills, thousands of hours on the field of battle & many attempts trying to slam home a major the Golden Ox Craig Fabian DID finally kick a goal !!  Not happy with that effort the great man went on a rampage to bag 2 more & finish the game with 3 in the final quarter. A Rocs stalwart, great clubman, top team man & fearless competitor, we all hope that the floodgates have been opened for the Golden Ox.
