ROCFC Premiership Reunion - Saturday August 6th 2011

A Grade Report - R10

We played poorly in the first half in the face of some sustained physical pressure and were indecisive and distracted too easily. We were lucky to only be 9 points adrift at the break. In the second half we played with passion and power, kicking 15 goals 6 to five points from Athelstone to win by a huge margin. This shows what we are capable of but also how we can take nothing for granted and must develop our level of consistency if we are to be serious contenders.

Few were good for four quarters. Ryan Castellano had a career day with 6 goals and over 30 possessions, Matt Dawes was always tough and competitive. Michael Aloisi, Jack Nelligan, Ryan Holm and Luke Manuel played well in our revival, as did many others.

B Grade Report - R10

The match against Athelstone was the most important game of the year for us if we want to play finals. Before the game Athelstone were 5th with 5 wins and we were 7th with 3 wins. A loss would have had us 3 wins out of the finals and realistically we would struggle to play in September.

The lads started really well and led by 2 goals at quarter time and held that lead at half time. JD Derrington kicked the first goal of the second half and we held a handy 17 point lead in a low scoring game. However things didn't go to plan and Athelstone kicked the next 4 goals and took a 7 point lead into the last quarter. A month ago we would not have been able to respond and probably lost the game by 5 goals. However this team has grown in confidence and faith in each other as the year has progressed and the young men were magnificent in the last term kicking 4 goals, playing some exciting and passionate footy to win by 10 points. It was really pleasing to see this group be so excited to win and grow more in self belief and getting rewards for their efforts.

Everyone contributed really well at different stages of the game. Tim Felice deserves a special mention for his efforts at full forward, giving us a good target all day and kicking 2 last quarter goals under pressure. Eamonn Hanna was solid at centre half back and took a Leo Barry saving grab in the final term and our captain Jonno Trenorden worked tirelessly all day in the centre. Fifth best in this weeks game went to young full back Charlie O'Malley who won his position against a bigger opponent by gietting his fist to the ball and being able to run off his opponent and used the ball well. 4th best was Alex McKenzie who is learning the game each week. He kicked 2 goals and is improving as ruckman around the ground. Dan Gilbert always gives 100% from his wing and put his body on the line taking a couple of contested marks and kicking a really good goal in the last term. (You would have paid to watch his celebration afterwards)!!

2nd best player was Trent Versace who had a fantastic first half competing at centre half forward and presented well against a bigger opponent. He also sured up the back line in the third term when we were under pressure and again in the last term gave us plenty up forward. Clearly I thought our best player was David Eckert. Playing on the ball he repeatedly used his body as a battering ram and getting the ball out to our younger running players. His last quarter efforts in the middle at throw-ups really lifted the team and he was the reason we won the game.

In round one we lost to Athelstone by 12 goals and we were quite intimiated. It really shows how much this group has grown as the season has progressed. And yes finals are still on the cards for this team.
